Ana Marie Cox Bio, Life, and Career:

Ana Marie Cox is an American author, blogger, political columnist, and critic. She was born on September 23, 1972, in the United States. She was the Senior Political Correspondent for MTV News, as well as the founder editor of the political site Wonkette, and she was responsible for conducting the “Talk” interviews that were featured in The New York Times Magazine from 2015 to 2017. In 2010, Cox was working for GQ as the Washington correspondent for the publication. Since 2009, Cox has been contributing to The Daily Beast in various capacities. Prior to that, she held a position with Air America Media. Prior to August 2014, she worked as a lead blogger on United States politics for The Guardian, and she is currently an editor at Mother Jones. Cox was born in Puerto Rico’s capital city of San Juan. Her family hails from Texas and has roots in both Scotland and Ireland.

She went to Lincoln Southeast High School, which is located in Lincoln, Nebraska, and while there, she contributed to The Clarion, the school newspaper. In 1994, she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Chicago. Her major was American History. She had planned on pursuing a doctorate degree in American history at the University of California, Berkeley, where she had begun her studies. However, she ultimately decided against doing so and instead began working as an editorial assistant for the publishing business Alfred A. Knopf. Cox served in an editorial capacity at the left-leaning online journal known as Bad Subjects. Later on, she worked for Suck.com as an executive editor, where she contributed articles using the pen name Ann Tate, which is a pun on the word annotate.

Cox assumed her position as the founding editor of the political blog Wonkette in the year 2004. During her time as editor, Wonkette served as a humorous satire on the politics of Capitol Hill in Washington, as well as a forum for discussing more weighty issues of politics and policy. Because they publicized the story of Jessica Cutler, also known as “Washingtonienne,” a staff assistant to Senator Mike DeWine (R-Ohio) who accepted money from a George W. Bush administration official and others in exchange for sexual favors, Cox and Wonkette gained notoriety in the world of politics. Jessica Cutler had accepted money in exchange for sexual favors. On January 5, 2006, Cox made the official announcement that she was stepping down from her role as editor of the blog and would soon be known as “Wonkette Emerita.”

On January 6, 2006, the novel by Cox titled “Dog Days,” which is a satire of life in Washington, D.C., and for which she was reputedly paid $250,000, was released to the public. The reviews for the book were, on the whole, not positive. Christopher Buckley, writing for The New York Times, referred to it as a “really well-written first novel” and praised its “brisk, clever, smutty, and knowing” qualities. In the Times as well, Janet Maslin wrote that despite Cox’s “satirical expertise,” the novel is full of “stock characters” and “manages to be doubly conventional: it follows both an old-fashioned love-betrayal-redemption arc and the newer, bitchier nanny-Prada chick-lit motif.” Maslin also stated that the novel is “replete with stock characters” and “manages to be doubly conventional.”  Toby Young, writing for Slate.com, described the novel as being “shallow.” He went on to say,

The problem is that once the plot is initiated, it never really takes off and becomes interesting. Dog Days has the potential to be an interesting comic book, but Cox hasn’t put in the effort to learn the fundamentals of the genre despite the fact that he wrote it. I kept waiting for the various components to reach a boiling point, but as the story progresses, Cox seems to be turning the heat down rather than turning it up.  According to Human Events, “a dismal 5,000 copies” of the book had been sold more than a year after it had been published. Cox was given the title of Washington editor at Time.com on July 27, 2006, and during that time she also wrote for The Ana Log.

On April 12, 2007, Cox stated in an article published on the website of Time magazine that she wanted to be regarded as a member of the media elite so badly that she agreed to appear on the Don Imus radio show despite the show’s history of airing stuff that was both racially and sexually charged. This is what Cox wrote: “It is embarrassing for me to admit that it took Imus saying something so appallingly crude for me to understand that there was no reason other than my ego to play along, but I must confess that it did. I participated in the show nearly entirely for the purpose of earning my media elite badge of achievement.”  On December 5, 2008, Cox made the announcement that she would no longer be contributing to the Swampland blog that is associated with Time magazine.
