Aaron Blabey Bio, Life, and Career:

Author of children’s books Aaron Blabey was born in Australia on January 1, 1974. The Bad Guys, a New York Times #1 bestselling graphic novel series for young readers about a gang of frightening-looking animals trying to change their bad reputations, and Thelma the Unicorn, a second picture book series about a plain little pony who pretends to be a unicorn, are three of his best-selling children’s series. Pig the Pug is a rude, selfish, and mean-spirited little dog.

Around 30 million copies of Blabey’s novels were in print as of December 2021, and they were on the New York Times Bestseller List for more than 120 weeks. On July 3, 2019, The Bad Guys became the first to reach number one. The American premiere of DreamWorks Animation’s animated film adaption of The Bad Guys, starring Sam Rockwell, Awkwafina, Marc Maron, Craig Robinson, and Anthony Ramos, took place on April 22, 2022. Along with Patrick Hughes and Ethan Cohen, Blabey served as the film’s executive producer.

It was revealed in May 2019 that Netflix is creating a musical film version of Thelma the Unicorn, with Blabey acting once again as executive producer. Blabey was also an actress up to 2005. Before quitting acting in 2005, he was most notable for his major parts in two television comedies: The Damnation of Harvey McHugh (1994), for which he received an Australian Film Institute Award, and Crash Burn (2003).

Then, in 2006, Blabey shifted all of his attention to writing picture books for kids. Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, the first of these, were released in July 2007. The book won an Early Childhood category award from the Children’s Book Council of Australia in 2008. The book was also placed on the shortlist for the Children’s Peace Literature Award, the NSW Premier’s Literature Awards’ Patricia Wrightson Award, and the CBCA’s Crichton Award, which honors emerging illustrators.

The book was also listed as a Notable Book by the Smithsonian Institution in 2008. His second book, Sunday Chutney, was released in 2008 and was nominated for the Australian Book Industry Awards and the CBCA Picture Book of the Year 2009. The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon, his third book, was chosen as a 2012 White Raven by the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany. Stanley Paste, his third book, received a 2010 CBCA Notable Book in the Picture Book category.

In addition, The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon took home the 2013 Children’s Peace Literature Award and the Patricia Wrightson Award from the New South Wales Premier’s Literary Awards. Nick Cave decided to record The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon for the Story Box Library website in the early months of 2014. In 2013, when his highly praised sixth book, Noah Dreary, was published, his fifth book, The Dreadful Fluff, received the Australian Publishers Association’s award for Best Designed Children’s Cover of the Year.

The picture book Babies Don’t Suck: A Guide for Expectant New Fathers was read after that. The Brothers Quibble, Blabey’s sixth picture book, which explores sibling conflict, was selected as the National Simultaneous Storytime Book of 2015 and was read by more than 500,000 kids on May 27, 2015. The book became a bestseller right away in Australia and has since been published all over the globe in other languages.

Pig the Fibber (2015), Pig the Winner (2016), Pig the Elf (2016), Pig the Star (2017), Pig the Grub (2018), Pig the Tourist (2019), Pig the Slob (Blob) (2020), and Pig the Monster are only a few of the Pig novels that resulted from it (2021). Millions of copies of the Pig novels have been sold across the globe, mostly in the USA and Australia.

Thelma the Unicorn, the second novel of his first three-book agreement, was published. This children’s book, which tells the story of a simple little pony who wants to turn into a unicorn, has also achieved success. It has also sold millions of copies together with its sequel, The Return of Thelma the Unicorn.

It was revealed in June 2019 that Netflix is creating an animated musical adaption of Thelma the Unicorn. The film will be directed by Jared Hess and Lynn Wang, while Mikros Image Montreal will handle the animation. The project’s executive producer will be Blabey. Early in the new millennium, Blabey began to paint. Six solo exhibits of his art were held in Australia between 2004 and 2006. He gave up acting around 2005–2006 and embraced his new artistic path.

On toilet paper, Aaron penned his first book, Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, which is still proudly displayed in his house. On his boarding card for the flight, he started penning the narrative. Day by day, the plot evolved. Aaron had run out of boarding passes to write on and the folks he was staying with were sound sleeping, both of which were unfortunate. Aaron looked about for anything to use but couldn’t find anything, so he went to the guest bathroom and used a lot of toilet paper.

Charlie Parsley and Pearl Barley were created and published just as Aaron had intended. Following the success of Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley (Penguin Books Australia), which was published in 2007, Aaron wrote Sunday Chutney (Penguin Books Australia), which was published in 2008, and Stanley Paste (Penguin Books Australia), which was published in 2009.

The Dreadful Fluff, Noah Dreary, and The Brothers Quibble were all published by Penguin Books Australia between 2011 and 2014. The Ghost of Miss Annabel Spoon by Penguin Books Australia was released in 2012. The first book in the Pig series, Pig the Pug, was published in 2014. Since then, Scholastic Australia has released Pig the Fibber in 2015, Pig the Winner in 2016, and Pig the Elf just in time for Christmas this year.

The first episode of The Bad Guys series (Episode 1) was published by Scholastic in July 2015, and Episode 2 – Mission Unpluckable was published in November 2015. Episode 3: The Furball Strikes Back debuted in May 2016 and was followed by Episode 4: Apocalypse Meow, which came out last month. 2014 saw the publication of Babies Don’t Suck by Aaron, a picture book for adults published by Pan Macmillan. Aaron published three stand-alone books via Scholastic in addition to Pig the Fibber and two in The Bad Guys series: Thelma the Unicorn, Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas, and I Need A Hug. In 2016, Don’t Call Me Bear was made available.
