Adam Curry Bio, Life, and Career:

Adam Clark Curry (born September 3, 1964) is well-known for his time as a VJ on MTV and as one of the first celebrities to develop and manage their own Web sites. In the 2000s, he became interested in podcasting for the first time and earned the nickname “Podfather.” He is also well-known for co-hosting the No Agenda show. While his birthplace was Arlington, Virginia, Curry spent the years between 1972 and 1987 in the city of Amstelveen, Netherlands. Under the alias “John Holden,” he cut his teeth in the early 1980s on Dutch pirate radio stations Radio Picasso in Amstelveen and Radio Decibel in Amsterdam before landing a gig hosting the Dutch weekly pop-music television program Countdown and its English-language counterpart, which aired on the pan-European music channel Music Box.

He hosted a number of radio and TV shows for the Dutch network Veronica. Other than his work on Countdown, Adam Curry is best known in the Netherlands for his weekly appearance on the Curry and Van Inkel Radioshow (with fellow Dutch DJ Jeroen van Inkel) on Radio 3 for Veronica from 19:00 to 22:00 CET on Fridays. Curry started working at MTV as a VJ in 1987. He was a regular on MTV’s lineup, popping in between music videos and hosting shows like Headbangers Ball and MTV’s Top 20 Video Countdown, where he conducted interviews with artists like Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney. He hosted the national radio show HitLine USA and was the drive-time host for the New York City radio station WHTZ while working at MTV.

From November 1991 until June 1994, Adam Curry presented the radio countdown show “Adam Curry’s Top 30 Hitlist” for Entertainment Radio Networks. With the intention of being MTV’s unofficial new voice on the Internet, Curry registered the then-unclaimed domain name “mtv.com” in 1993. This action was approved by his bosses at MTV Networks, but when Curry departed to create his own web-portal design and hosting company, OnRamp Inc., MTV sued him for the domain name. Later, it merged with Answerthink Inc., at which point it employed over 7,400 individuals across seven international locations.

In 2005, Curry and Ron Bloom created the video-sharing website PodShow, which is now known aMevio. Mevio announced in May 2008 that they had 9 million monthly users. Distributed “brand-safe” content is provided to advertisers. It has raised about US$38 million since its inception, including a third round of funding of $15 million in July 2008. After moving to Los Angeles, California, Mevio renamed themselves Bitesize Entertainment and then BiteSizeTV.  The Curry family left the United States in 1999 when Curry sold his firm and settled in the Netherlands, where Curry aired a morning talk/music show on Radio Veronica. The Dutch online retailer Sportus.nl, which had been in operation since 1999 and featured athletes including Marcel Wouda, Jacco Eltingh, Ron Zwerver, and Danielle Overgaag, declared bankruptcy in 2001. The year 2002 saw the end of Freedom Controller, another content exchange effort. He and Simon Cavendish, a partner from one of his previous businesses, established RotorJet in 2000 to provide helicopter transportation. In 2005, the firm declared bankruptcy. After some back-and-forth, Cavendish seized RotorJet’s assets, and a Dutch court later ordered Curry to pay back almost $3 million in cash he had taken out of the company.
