Alex Brightman Bio, Life and Career:

Alex Brightman is an actor and writer who has been nominated for a Tony Award. He has appeared on Broadway in productions of School of Rock, Matilda, Big Fish, Wicked, and Glory Days. He has also appeared on television in Documentary Now!, SMILF, and Important Things with Demetri Martin. In one horror movie, he was brutally murdered on a toilet. It’s Kind of a Funny Story (Universal Theatrical), The Whipping Boy, and Make Me Bad are among musicals that he and his writing partner Drew Gasparini have contributed to as songwriters.

His credits may be seen here. Both of his most recent pieces, We Left It Here and Everything Is Fine, are scheduled to have their world premieres in the Big Apple in 2019. I’d like to dedicate this one to Carole Shelley. Brightman debuted in a Broadway show for the first time in 2008, serving as an understudy for the doomed production of Glory Days, which closed after its first performance that was not a preview. Never once did Brightman appear on stage during the show.

After that, Brightman was given the role of Boq, a munchkin, in Wicked, which was his first performance on Broadway. He continued working for the show for a total of two years. In 2013, he was cast in Big Fish on Broadway as a member of the ensemble and as an understudy for a leading part. This was his next role on Broadway. Later same year (2013), Brightman was selected to play the role of Michael Wormwood in the musical adaptation of Matilda.

Brightman joined Andrew Lloyd Webber’s most recent musical endeavor in 2015, titled School of Rock, which was adapted from the film of the same name that was released in 2003. During the beginning of the process, Brightman took on a number of roles that were originally written for kid actors but were instead acted by adults during the workshops. Brightman was given his first opportunity to shine in the role of a leading man when he was cast as Dewey in the Broadway production of the musical after having previously played the part in the company’s concert performances.

Brightman gave a performance at the Winter Garden Theatre on Broadway as the character Dewey Finn. Brightman earned a nomination for the 2016 Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his work in this production, and he went on to win the award. The performance that Brightman gave on November 6, 2016, was his last one in the role of Dewey. Brightman, along with fellow Broadway actors and writers Andrew Kober, F. Michael Haynie, and Drew Gasparini, is a part of the comedy group known as The (M)orons.

Brightman and Gasparini are in the process of developing a new musical that will be titled The Whipping Boy. Brightman has contributed to the writing of the lyrics for this musical. During his time spent at preparatory school, he was an enthusiastic participant in both community theater and improv. He started attending the CAP21 musical-theater conservatory program at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, but he left the program in 2007.

Brightman was cast in the 2015 production of School of Rock, the most recent musical to be created by Andrew Lloyd Webber and based on the film of the same name from 2003.

On November 6, 2016, Brightman gave his last performance as Dewey, and he came back to reprise the character for a limited run in April of 2017. Beetlejuice marked his comeback to Broadway in 2019, where he starred as the title character (based on the film of the same name).

At the 73rd annual Tony Awards presentation, he was once again considered for the Tony Award in the category of Best Actor in a Musical. On May 21st, 2018, Alex Brightman tied the knot with casting director Jenny Ravitz in a ceremony that took place in Brooklyn. Casting director Jenny Ravitz worked on the NBC drama programs Chicago Med, Chicago P.D., and Chicago Fire. She has worked as a casting director for a variety of musicals, plays, pilots, and films, including Mason Street Warehouse in Saugatuck, Michigan, which is a non-profit theater; she has also cast for other plays and pilots.

Brightman, along with fellow Broadway actors and writers Andrew Kober, F. Michael Haynie, and Drew Gasparini, is a part of the comedy group known as The (M)orons. The Whipping Boy and It’s Kind of a Funny Story are the titles of two new musicals that are now in the process of being developed by Brightman and Gasparini. Brightman has collaborated with Gasparini on the writing of the lyrics for both of these musicals.

Brightman made a cameo appearance in an episode of Impractical Jokers that was devoted to Brian “Q” Quinn’s musical punishment, which was inspired by the former’s actual experiences working in the fire service. It was revealed in October 2019 that Brightman will be participating in the cast of the upcoming comedy picture Here Today, which will be directed by Billy Crystal.
