Alexander Ovechkin Bio, Life, and Career:

Alexander Ovechkin was born on September 17, 1985, in Moscow, the son of two athletes who competed for the Soviet Union. In the sport of basketball, his mother, Tatyana Ovechkina, won the Olympic gold medal twice (1976 and 1980) and the world championship once (1975). His father, Mikhail, played football at one point in his life. Sergei and Mikhail, his older brothers, are his older siblings. His mother had a premonition that her youngest son will one day achieve “sporting greatness.” “That was clear from the moment I was born,” she added. “While seeing a child, it is instantly apparent. He was always on the move and curious about everything.”When he was just two years old, he tried his hand at hockey for the first time.

He would immediately stop whatever he was doing and insist that his parents not change the channel while a hockey game was being broadcast on television. In his early infancy, he relocated with his family to the outskirts of Moscow, where they settled in a huge high-rise building that was bordered by a “crumbling neighborhood.”There, he completed eight and a half grades at public school #596, which was notorious for having the military discipline and a “tyrannical” principal, before enrolling at Dynamo Moscow’s sports academy. Even as he saw his pals “getting high and getting dead,” Ovechkin was consistently putting in work at the gym, both in the morning and the evening. When he was asked about his early training, he responded by saying, “You delve into the sport with your head, arms, and legs, and there’s no time for anything else.”

At the age of 11, he set himself apart from other players in the Dynamo Moscow system by scoring 56 goals, shattering Pavel Bure’s record of 53 goals scored. While this was going on, Ovechkin kept trading cards of famous NHL players stowed in his room, mainly Mario Lemieux cards since he looked up to him as a player and considered him to be his hero. When asked about the NHL, Ovechkin would reply, “It’s the best hockey there is.” Ovechkin is known by his nicknames “Ovi” (sometimes spelled “Ovie”) and “the Great Eight,” both of which are references to the number eight on his jersey.

He is widely recognized as one of the best goal-scorers in the history of the sport. Ovechkin owns multiple records in the National Hockey League, including the most goals scored on the power play, the most goals scored in away games, and the most goals scored with the same team in the league’s history. He is second only to Wayne Gretzky in the all-time goal-scoring category. After Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky, he is only the third player in the history of the NHL to score 800 goals during the regular season. Ovechkin started his professional career in the year 2001 with Dynamo Moscow of the Russian Superleague.

He played there for a total of four seasons then returned for a short time during the 2012–2013 NHL lockout. Ovechkin was a highly anticipated talent when the NHL Entry Draft was held in 2004, and the Capitals chose him with the first overall pick. Ovechkin’s first season with the Capitals, the 2005–06 campaign, was also the year he won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s rookie of the year and finished third overall in scoring. He led all rookies in points with a total of 52, including 54 assists, and he finished third overall in the league.

Ovechkin holds the record for most wins of the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy, which is presented annually to the player in the National Hockey League who has scored the most goals. He won the trophy for the first time in 2007–08, the same year that his 65 goals and 112 points earned him the Art Ross Trophy for the most points scored. He now shares the record with Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for the most seasons with at least 50 goals scored in the history of the National Hockey League (NHL).

He has been awarded the Lester B. Pearson Award/Ted Lindsay Award for the best player as voted on by the National Hockey League Players’ Association three times, as well as the Hart Memorial Trophy for most valuable player three times (in 2008, 2009, and 2013). In addition, he has won the Ted Lindsay Award three times (2008, 2009, 2010). In 2018, Ovechkin became the first player in franchise history to win the Stanley Cup.

He also received the Conn Smythe Award as the playoffs’ most valuable player, earning him the honor. Also, he has been selected for inclusion in the first All-Star squad of the NHL eight times, as well as the second All-Star team four times. Ovechkin was selected as one of the 100 greatest players in the history of the NHL in the year 2017.

Ovechkin has been the representative of Russia in a number of competitions held outside of the country. His debut in an IIHF competition came in 2002 at the World Under-18 Championship. The year after that, he made his debut in the World Junior Championship, where he contributed to Russia’s victory and helped them take home the gold medal. He continued to compete at the World Juniors for another two years, as well as the World U18 Championships for one more year.

Ovechkin competed in his first senior competition in 2004, which was the World Championship. That same year, he also participated in the World Cup. Ovechkin is a multi-talented athlete who represented Russia at the Winter Olympics in 2006, 2010, and 2014. During his career, Ovechkin has competed for Russia in a total of thirteen World Championships and three Olympic Games. He has been victorious in all three of those World Championship competitions.
