American criminal justice reform supporter and former federal prisoner Alice Marie Johnson was born on May 30, 1955. She was found guilty in 1996 of participating in a Memphis cocaine trafficking ring and given a life sentence. After serving 21 years in prison, she was freed from the Federal Correctional Institution, Aliceville, in June 2018 after the 45th President of the United States, Donald Trump, used his executive authority to grant clemency and commute her sentence, which became effective right away.
Johnson was given a complete and unconditional pardon by Trump in August 2020 as a result of his power as US President.Johnson was born in Mississippi, and her memoirs describe her experiences as one of nine children raised by sharecroppers, a pregnant sophomore in high school, and a secretary after that.
She was the sole parent of five children at the time of her arrest. After losing her ten-year employment at FedEx owing to a gambling addiction, a divorce, and the death of her youngest son in a motorcycle accident, Johnson disclosed to Mic in 2017 that she had been engaged in the heroin trade.
Her home was foreclosed upon after she declared bankruptcy in 1991. In connection with her participation in a cocaine trafficking operation centred in Memphis, Tennessee, Johnson was detained in 1993 and found guilty on eight federal criminal counts in 1996.
In addition to charges related to narcotics conspiracy, she was also found guilty of money laundering and structuring, the latter offence arising from the purchase of a home with a down payment that was made in a way to avoid exceeding a $10,000 reporting threshold.
There were more than a dozen participants in the Memphis operation. The 16 defendants included in the indictment characterised her as the head of a multi-million dollar cocaine ring and provided details on dozens of narcotics deals and deliveries.
The trial’s evidence established that the Memphis organisation had ties to Texas-based Colombian drug lords. In 1997, she received a life without parole sentence. Johnson was “the ultimate entrepreneur” in a business dealing in 2,000 to 3,000 kg of cocaine, with an operation that had a “very profound” influence on the neighbourhood, according to U.S. District Judge Julia Gibbons at the sentencing hearing.

Alice Marie Johnson Career
The sentences for co-defendants Curtis McDonald and Jerlean McNeil were 19 years in federal prison and life, respectively. A number of Johnson’s other co-defendants who gave testimony against him were given terms ranging from probation to ten years.
Johnson admitted to being a middleman in the drug ring after being found guilty, but claimed she never transacted business or sold drugs. While in jail, Johnson gave birth to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She behaved well while she was incarcerated.
In a memoir she wrote after being freed, she detailed her time at the Federal Medical Center, Carswell, a federal prison hospital in Texas, where she earned her certification as a hospice worker. She then claimed that she was transferred to FCI Aliceville to be nearer to her family.
FCI Aliceville employees claimed in letters supporting Johnson’s clemency request that she had not broken any rules while she was a prisoner there. Johnson took part in a pilot project that allowed some female federal prisoners access to videoconferencing, which was launched by Deputy Attorney General Sally Yates in 2016.
The programme permitted the online journal Mic to film a video interview with her that went viral and made her case well-known. While incarcerated, she also delivered speeches via Skype to audiences at Hunter College, Yale, and other venues.
She received her ministry ordination while she was incarcerated and attributed her clemency to divine intervention. Since being freed, Johnson has taken a stand for American criminal justice system reform, frequently citing her own experiences.
She demanded an end to mandatory sentencing in the month following her release, in July 2018. In September 2019, she had a meeting with Tennessee Governor Bill Lee to discuss her concerns with the cash bail system and to advocate for increased access to expungement, prisoner education, and the removal of barriers to reentry.
Johnson also supports giving female voices a platform in the debate over criminal justice reform. UN Women published her story as part of its “Courage to Question” series in advance of International Women’s Day in 2019. After Life: My Journey From Incarceration To Freedom, a collection of memoirs by Johnson and Nancy French, was released by HarperCollins in May 2019 and featured a foreword by Kim Kardashian.
According to a Kirkus review, the autobiography is “a moving, inspirational story that makes a powerful case for sentencing reform.” The American Civil Liberties Union and the website Mic started a campaign in favour of her release, with supporters claiming that the penalty was excessive and a prime example of how impacts on African Americans are disproportionately severe.
Johnson received support from a wide range of people and groups, including U.S. Representatives Steve Cohen, Bennie Thompson, and Marc Veasey; professors of law Marc Morjé Howard and Shon Hopwood; and author Piper Kerman of Orange is the New Black.
The warden supported her release, according to her attorney Shawn Holley. Johnson’s petition was one of the 16,776 that were submitted as part of the Obama administration’s clemency programme in 2014. She requested pardon and a second chance in a CNN op-ed she wrote in 2016.
Just prior to Obama’s resignation, her application was rejected. In 2018, Kim Kardashian and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of President Donald Trump, pushed Trump to pardon Johnson. In order to urge the President to pardon Johnson, Kardashian met with him in the Oval Office at the end of May 2018.
Following Kardashian’s appeal, on June 6, 2018, Trump commuted Johnson’s sentence, resulting in his release. Trump showed clemency in a number of “high-profile cases brought to him by associates and allies,” including the commutation of sentence.
Given Trump’s prior statements in favour of drug dealers being executed, The Washington Post’s Wonkblog described the pardon as somewhat unexpected. Johnson was a guest of the president on February 5, 2019, when Trump gave his State of the Union address.
Standing ovations were given to her by members of Congress after Trump asked her to stand up to be recognised. Trump gave Johnson a complete pardon on August 28, 2020, the day after she spoke at the 2020 Republican National Convention.
