Amy Schumer Bio, Life, and Career:

Amy Beth Schumer is a stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and director based in the United States. Schumer was born on June 1, 1981. Beginning in the early 2000s, Amy Schumer pursued a career in stand-up comedy, and in 2007, she made her debut on the NBC reality competition series Last Comic Standing, which was then in its fifth season. From 2013 until 2016, she served as the creator, co-producer, co-writer, and star of the sketch comedy series Inside Amy Schumer, which aired on Comedy Central. For her work on the show, she was honored with a Peabody Award and was nominated for five Primetime Emmy Awards, ultimately winning the award for Outstanding Variety Sketch Series in 2015.

Trainwreck (2015) was Schumer’s first film, which she also wrote and starred in. For her work on the film, she was nominated for the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Original Screenplay and the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture Comedy or Musical. In 2016, she released a memoir titled The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, which debuted at number one on the list of best-selling non-fiction books in The New York Times and remained there for two weeks.

She was considered for two Grammys in the same year, one for Best Comedy Album for Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo and another for Best Spoken Word Album for The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo. On June 1, 1981, Schumer was born on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, New York City, New York, to parents Sandra Jane (née Jones) and Gordon David Schumer, who ran a baby-furniture company at the time of their marriage.

The elder Schumer came from a Jewish family that originally hailed from Ukraine. Chuck Schumer, a United States Senator and the Majority Leader of the Senate, is her second cousin once removed. Prior to getting married, her mother, who was raised in a Protestant household and has deep roots in New England, made the decision to convert to Judaism. Schumer reports that she encountered antisemitism when she was a child despite the fact that she was brought up Jewish.

Her maternal family tree includes Puritans who lived in the English colony of Massachusetts during the 17th century. In 2017, Schumer appeared as a guest on the television show Finding Your Roots. During her appearance, she discovered that in 1704, three children from her ancestor Thomas Tarbell’s family were kidnapped at Groton, Massachusetts, during a French-Abenaki raid and taken to Montreal. The girl was ransomed by a family from French Canada, and she eventually joined a Catholic convent in France; the two boys were each adopted by Mohawk families at Kahnawake, and they became thoroughly assimilated into their new families’ culture. They had children by Mohawk women, and some of those children rose to the rank of chief.

There are still Mohawk people with the surname Tarbell living in Kahnawake and Akwesne, which is another village reserve located on the St. Lawrence River that the brothers established. After receiving her bachelor’s degree in theatre from Towson University in 2003 and relocating to New York City, Schumer landed a role in the Off-Off-Broadway production of the black comedy Keeping Abreast, in which she played a young woman who had been diagnosed with breast cancer.  On June 1, 2004, she gave her debut performance at Gotham Comedy Club, which marked the beginning of her stand-up comedy career.  In 2007, she recorded an episode of Live at Gotham for Comedy Central prior to appearing on Last Comic Standing. She later recalled that she considered the episode to be her “big break” in the comedy industry.
