Amy Shark Bio, Life, and Career:

Amy Louise Billings, who was born on May 14, 1986, is an Australian indie pop singer-songwriter-guitarist and producer who hails from the Gold Coast in the state of Queensland. She is better known by her stage name, Amy Shark. Between the years of 2008 and 2012, she released her earliest solo material under the name Amy Cushway and played it live. Her track “Adore,” which she released in 2016, reached the number three spot on the ARIA Singles Chart and the number two spot on the Triple J Hottest 100, in 2016.

On the ARIA Albums Chart, her album Love Monster (which was released in July 2018) debuted at number one. Shark has been awarded eight ARIA Music Awards out of a total of twenty-nine nominations, including three wins for “Best Pop Release.” These victories came in 2017, 2018, and 2020 for the extended play “Night Thinker,” “Love Monster,” and “Everyone Rise,” respectively. On May 14th, 1986, Amy Shark was born on the Gold Coast in the state of Queensland.

After the death of Shark’s biological father, Robyn’s mother Robyn remarried and reared Shark together with her new husband David Cushway, and another younger half-sibling on the Gold Coast.  Her ancestry includes both Hungarian and Anglo blood.  During her time at Southport State High School, she participated in the school’s theatrical productions, studied film, and was a member of an all-female punk band that she played guitar. She used the terms “Dorothy’s Rainbow” and “Hansel Kissed Gretel” to characterize her first two bands “as “very thrashy,” despite the fact that they disintegrated when their members split away. “I continued on, and continued writing tunes on my acoustic guitar,” I said.”

Her first employment was working at a souvenir shop called Gone Troppo, where she sold T-shirts.  In 2007, Shark participated in a singing competition after being encouraged to do so by her boyfriend at the time, Shane Billings. After that, she began performing under a variety of identities, such as Little Sleeper, Amy Cushway, and Amy Billings, among others. Throughout the years 2008 and 2012, Amy Shark released recordings and performed under the stage name Amy Cushway.

Her debut performance as a solo artist took place at the Burleigh Bears Rugby League Club, where she sang cover versions of songs.  When she first began performing alone, she did it accompanied just by an acoustic guitar.  Cushway provided backup for live performances given by Brianna Carpenter in June 2008 at The Globe and at The Red Brick Hotel in Brisbane.

In the middle of 2008, she released her first extended play, which was titled I Thought of You Out Loud and included the single “Take Time Take Me.” She began performing the EP at solo events in July after it was released.  When some time had passed, she reflected on this EP, saying, “[it was me] not knowing any chords but so emotionally spent that I needed anything to boost me up and get my blood flowing again.”

In August of 2008, the singer-version songwriters of “Take Time Take Me” competed for a spot in the finals of the alternative category of the Q Songs Awards. She contemplated her approach to composing, “It is a lot simpler and more pleasurable to begin writing a song from scratch because you can give it exactly the form that you want it to take. It may sound conceited, but it’s just the way things are  I can assure you that I write songs that the average person’s ear has never heard before, and the words are genuine and can be related to by people of any age.

I’m not attempting to compose songs with radio play in mind… I want heavy-hitting pop rock songs that have the ability to be broadcast on the radio while also being loud enough to be heard all the way into stadiums.”  Tegan and Sara were a significant source of motivation for her because according to her, “they find new methods to express the meaning of a song with words that don’t necessarily spell it out.” At the Island Vibe Festival in South Brisbane in November, the musician provided support for Rhiannon Hart.

When Amy Shark was “only a kid, one or two,” her biological father Robyn and her mother Robyn’s relationship ended in divorce. Based on the achievements “Haven’t heard from my father in 15 years till now,” Shark said in response to her birth father’s attempt to re-establish contact with his biological daughter. “Adore” Knowing that your kid has made it this far on her own without any help from you had to be frustrating. Now you have to win! I’m busy.”  She reflected on her stepfather, David Cushway, in this passage “I used to call him Dave, but I remember the day I asked my mother whether it would be okay to call Dave “Dad.” I used to call him Dave.

She shed a tear. “Why don’t you go and ask him?” she suggested to me. So I went to him in person and asked him, and he started crying. I was really young at the time, but I remember that time very clearly.” Early recordings were given the name Amy Cushway as the artist (2008–2012). Shane Billings, a resident of the Gold Coast who was born in New Zealand, and Shark first crossed paths in 2007, and the couple tied the knot on the 11th of May in 2013. Amy Louise Billings is the author of the content that she has produced.

Both members of the pair held jobs with the Gold Coast Titans, the local National Rugby League football club: Shark in the role of video editor and Shane in the role of a financial manager. She resigned from her position in November of 2016.  Shane served as Shark’s talent manager until she got a recording contract with Jaddan Comerford of UNIFIED Music Group. After that, Shane remained to serve as Shark’s manager for the local market.  The two people currently call Broadbeach Waters their home.
