Andrew Santino Bio, Life, and Career:

Andrew W. Santino was born in the United States on October 16, 1983. He is best known for his roles in television series and movies such as Sin City Saints and  The Disaster Artist, Mixology, “I’m Dying Up Here,” and Dave is the songs in question. River North, located in Chicago, was Santino’s home throughout his childhood. He was raised by a single mother and resided in Section 8 housing throughout his childhood. The year 2001 marked Santino’s graduation from Naperville North High School, after which he continued his education at Arizona State University.

On the show I’m Dying Up Here, he played the role of Bill Hobbs, a talented and well-known comedian who brings down his own career by harboring a resentful attitude and having a pessimistic outlook on life.  At this time, he is starring in the series Dave, which is based on a fictionalized account of the life of the rapper Lil Dicky. Santino plays the role of Dave’s roommate as well as his manager. In 2017, he presented an episode of “Home Field Advantage” on Showtime 1.  In addition to that, he had a recurring role in the NBC drama This Is Us, where he was cast as a producer for the made-up sitcom The Manny. Whiskey Ginger is a podcast that Santino produces and hosts, on which he chats with friends working in the entertainment industry about their lives while they sip whisky and look back on their experiences.

In the year 2020, Santino and Bobby Lee started working together as co-hosts of the Bad Friends podcast. Right off the bat, Santino brings up the pandemic as well as the preceding two years, but he doesn’t spend too much time dwelling on the subject matter. He deserves praise for that, but do any of us really want to hear any more jokes about Zoom meetings or Instagram reels? Not in my opinion. The first thing that Santino does is play to his strengths by jumping right into the first anecdote of the hour he’s going to tell. His ability to evoke vivid images in the reader’s mind with just his words is on full display here. He elevates the experience with his vocal chops, which include deftly switching accents and a variety of anthropomorphic voices (I mean, how many people can actually make you picture a vibrator taking a walk?) He has a wide range of voices, and they are all very distinctive.

In this episode of his podcast, Santino discusses his recent prostate exam with a straight face and in a great deal of unfiltered detail. This is something that he is known for on his other podcasts. He uses this graphic account of his visit to the doctor as an opportunity to draw parallels and bring attention to some of the more awkward aspects of dating for women. He also highlights some of the similarities between these two experiences. You’ll be able to relate to this if you’ve ever been on the classic low-effort, straight-to-the-point Tinder date that ends in a walk of shame. We also get to see him embrace the edgier side of his personality with a bit that raises questions about the sexuality of Jesus. Once more, Santino’s delivery and performance elevate what might otherwise be considered a rather tired or juvenile premise.

In spite of the contentious nature of the topic, he didn’t appear to be concerned about being attacked on stage or having beers thrown at him while he was speaking. It’s possible that it has something to do with the fact that he’s performing for a left-leaning crowd in Denver. All aspects of Jesus, including his appearance, his preferred beverage (although I do concur that beer would have been a more appropriate option), and his selection of miracles, are subject to scrutiny. A little bit of trivia for your enjoyment: On the show, I’m Dying Up Here, Santino portrayed a character who was based on the real-life figure Bill Hicks. Due to a particular joke about Jesus that Bill Hicks made during his appearance on Late Night with David Letterman, the segment was never broadcast. Is there some kind of link between the two? Yes, in my opinion.

It is reasonable to assert that not all of the jokes in the special were as funny as they were intended to be, despite the fact that the special contained a great deal of material that was entertaining. Santino tries very hard to look at the issue of climate change through a comedic lens, but unfortunately, his attempt is not supported by anything substantial. When he’s trying to play the contrarian and calculating the odds of a straw becoming lodged in a sea turtle’s nostrils, he gets the most laughs out of the situation. He requests that the shells be shown to him. However, it quickly degenerates into a profoundly unproductive argument along the lines of “what can we really do about it?”

We are treated to some more comedic commentary on politics as he takes aim at Joe Biden and Donald Trump. On the other hand, he does not have anything to say that we have not already heard. It’s a classic case of being in a catch-22 situation: caught between a rock and a hard place. While he is demonstrating how incompetent they are, he tells them, “Admit that you got tricked.”
