Angela Brigid Lansbury was born on October 16, 1925 in Regent’s Park, which is located in the central area of London. Her mother, Moyna Macgill, was an actress, and her father, Edgar Lansbury, was a timber merchant. Her grandfather, George Lansbury, was the leader of the “British Labour Party” and an anti-war activist. Her father followed in his grandfather’s footsteps and became a politician, continuing the family tradition. After her father passed away from stomach cancer when she was just nine years old, she was left in utter devastation. She went to “South Hampstead High School” from 1934 to 1939, but other than that, she educated herself primarily through reading, going to the theatre, and watching movies. In 1940, she enrolled at the “Webber Douglas School of Singing and Dramatic Art” located in Kensington, West London, and began taking acting classes there.

In 1940, following the passing of her grandfather, her mother emigrated to the United States in order to get away from the Blitz. After moving to the United States, she was awarded a scholarship by the “American Theatre Wing” and enrolled in the “Feagin School of Drama and Radio.” She completed her education there and received her diploma in 1942. She had performed onstage in a school production of Maxwell Anderson’s “Mary of Scotland” back in Britain. The play was directed by Maxwell Anderson.
