Annie Potts Bio, Life, and Career:

Anne Hampton Potts is a well-known American actress who was born on October 28th, 1952. Before starring in Ghostbusters (1984), Pretty in Pink (1986), Jumpin’ Jack Flash (1986), Who’s Harry Crumb? (1989), and Ghostbusters II (1989), she was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in Corvette Summer (1978) and won a Genie Award for her performance in Heartaches (1981). Both of these achievements came after she had already appeared in Ghostbusters (1984).

She provided the voice of Bo Peep in the first, second, and fourth films of the Toy Story franchise, which were released in 1995, 1999, and 2019, respectively, as well as in a variety of video games published by Disney. Potts is best known for her role as Mary Jo Jackson Shively on the CBS sitcom Designing Women, which ran from 1986 through 1993.

She played teacher Louanne Johnson on ABC drama Dangerous Minds for one season from 1996–1997, and she was nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards in 1998 and 1999 for her role as Mary Elizabeth Sims in the Lifetime drama series Any Day Now (1998–2002). They spent their childhood in Franklin, Kentucky, and she received her high school diploma from Franklin-Simpson in the year 1970.

She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in drama from Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri, where she studied for four years. Potts and her first husband, Steven Hartley, were involved in an automobile accident that resulted in Potts breaking multiple bones below her waist, including compound fractures to both legs and the loss of the heel of her right foot, while Hartley lost his left leg in the accident. In 1978, Potts had her first appearance on the big screen in the comedy film Corvette Summer, which was produced by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and starred Mark Hamill.

Because of her performance in the movie, she was considered for a Golden Globe Award nomination in the year 1979. She was honored with the Genie Award for Best Performance by a Foreign Actress in 1982 for her work in the film Heartaches, which told the story of a young woman who was married to a stock car driver and was pregnant with the child of his buddy. On the short-lived comedy series “Goodtime Girls,” which she starred in during the year 1980, she played the role of Edith Bedelmeyer, a woman who lived in an upstairs flat with three other ladies (who were portrayed by Georgia Engel, Lorna Patterson, and Francine Tacker, respectively).

Potts was honored with a Primetime Emmy Award for the 41st Annual Show in 1989. Being from Tennessee, Potts invented the character of receptionist Janine Melnitz in the Ghostbusters film series. Potts modeled the character’s signature New York accent on that of a friend of hers who was from the city. After that, she became well-known for her part as the cynical interior designer Mary Jo Shively on the CBS television sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993).

Since then, she has portrayed a broad variety of notable characters in a variety of films and television shows. For her performance as Dana Palladino on Love & War (1993–1995), she was considered for a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in the year 1994. Other notable roles include those played by Mary Elizabeth (O’Brien) Sims on the Lifetime Television drama series Any Day Now (1998–2002), for which she was nominated for two Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Drama Series; the voice of Bo Peep in three of the Toy Story films; a supporting role in John Hughes’s Pretty in Pink; and guest-starring roles on such CBS television series as Magnum, P.I., Joan of Ar Between the years 2005 and 2009, she appeared as Sophie Devere in NBC’s Law & Order: Special Victims Unit in reoccurring episodes.

Potts has worked on audio novels, notably the role of the narrator and heroine in Larry McMurtry’s Telegraph Days, for which she was awarded the 2007 Audie Award for Solo Narration-Female. Potts’s performance earned her the award. She had a starring role in the movie adaptation of Larry McMurtry’s Texasville, which was a continuation of The Last Picture Show. She replaced Hope Davis in the part on November 17, 2009, when she made her debut on Broadway by joining the cast of the play God of Carnage, which had previously won the Tony Award for Best Play.

In the comedy-drama series GCB that aired on ABC in 2012, Potts as Elizabeth “Gigi” Stopper, co-starring alongside Leslie Bibb, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Aspen, Miriam Shor, and Marisol Nichols.
