Arctic Monkeys are an English indie rock band that was formed in 2002 after members met at Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. Musicians Alex Turner (lead vocals) and Jamie Cook (rhythm guitar) are both members of the group, along with Nick O’Malley (backing vocals) and Matt Helders (drums, vocals). Andy Nicholson, the band’s original bassist, left in 2006.
There were only two UK Top 20 hits for the band: Teddy Picker (#6) and Crying Lightning (#12), both of which came after their debut singles I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor When the Sun Goes Down and Leave Before The Lights Go On. Brianstorm and Fluorescent Adolescent also charted at #5. Late 2004 and early 2005 saw the band’s rise to fame when their CD-based demo songs were uploaded to the internet.
The band’s unofficial Beneath the Boardwalk, which it recognizes on its website, quickly spread among message boards and friends, leading to an expanding fan base. These demos were collected on Beneath the Boardwalk, which the band acknowledges. While the band has benefited greatly from the Internet’s viral buzz, they have avoided traditional “commercial” channels like the UK’s (now discontinued) Top Of The Pops music show, which was often viewed as a stepping stone to fame.
There was a record for the biggest first-week sales of a debut album in the UK held by the band, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I Am Not (in its first week, it sold more than the rest of the Top 20 albums combined). After selling over 360,000 copies in its first week, the album came in second to Leona Lewis’ Spirit in November 2007.

According to a press release dated June 19, 2006, founding member Andy Nicholson had departed the band due to “fatigue” and the other members of the band couldn’t stand the constant “missing his girlfriend syndrome” so told him to sling his hook. A stand-in for the band’s remaining summer dates, ex-Dodgems bassist Nick O’Malley was brought in initially as a stand-in. After that, he was named Nicholson’s long-term successor.
The band’s third consecutive number-one single, Leave Before The Lights Come On, only peaked at number four in the UK charts. “Whatever People Say, That’s What I’m Not” was named the best album of 2006 by Q Magazine and received numerous other awards after being nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2006. They released Favourite Worst Nightmare, their second studio album, on the 23rd of April, 2007.
Just a week earlier, they had released the album’s lead single, “Brianstorm.” Even though it debuted at No. 1, it sold more copies than every other single from its predecessor, “Favourite Worst Nightmare,” put together. The next week, thanks to a mistake on iTunes, every track from the album made it into the UK Top 200 Singles. When asked about their most dreadful nightmare, they said Alex Turner had the following to say about this: “That much hasn’t changed about us in the last few decades.
It’s still a question of getting in touch with women or staying away from women “‘s a good place to start. Turner revealed that the band started working on the third album’s demos in January 2008 “After playing them on tour, we decided to record some of the songs we had already learned. That brings the total to six. Instead of pushing ourselves too hard, we’re going to take it easy this summer and begin working on new material.”
Before the Big Day Out festival, the band played in small venues in Wellington and Auckland to debut new material from the unreleased album. Wellington’s Town Hall hosted their first show in over a year on January 13th, 2009. “Crying Lightning,” “Go-Kart,” “Dangerous Animals,” and “Pretty Visitors” were among the new releases heard on the radio in both cities.
The Auckland show’s complete setlist can be found on the band’s website. A cover of “Red Right Hand” by Nick Cave was also performed. The band performed “Put Me In A Terror Pocket,” “Sandtrap,” and “The Fire and The Thud” live during their most recent tour. Alex Turner, the band’s frontman and primary songwriter, teamed up with Rascals singer Miles Kane to form a two-man project.
In other words, the band’s name is The Last Shadow Puppets “Crying Lightning” was the lead single from Arctic Monkeys’ album Humbug, which was released in August of that year. In 2011, they released Suck It And See their fourth studio album. On March 13th, 2013, they released AM, their fifth studio album. A month after the album’s debut, Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino became the band’s first new music in over a year.
Arctic Monkey’s net worth is estimated to be around $25 million dollars.
