Ashton Nicole Casey was born on February 19, 1996, in Oak Ridge, North Carolina, but she was raised in the city of Greensboro throughout her childhood. Her parents introduced her to a wide variety of musical styles, from country to Slipknot, and everything in between. She recalls that she first became interested in music, more specifically rap music when she listened to Arular by M.I.A. when she was 10 years old.
She did not start listening to male musicians until she was 16 years old. She did not listen to female musicians until she was 18 years old. When she was a teenager, her family relocated to Estonia in order for her father to further his education. They remained in Estonia for one year before moving once more, this time to Riga, Latvia. At one point in time, she was the only student from the United States living in Latvia who was enrolled in a public high school there. When Casey was 18 years old, she uprooted her life and moved all by herself to London.
The first song released by Ashnikko was titled “Krokodil,” and it was produced by Raf Riley. “Krokodil” was uploaded to SoundCloud in July of 2016. In 2017, she released her first extended play (EP) under the label Digital Picnic Records titled Sass Pancakes. Raf Riley served as the project’s producer, and Avelino contributed to it in various capacities. The Unlikeable EP was Ashnikko’s second one, and it was released in November 2018. The extended play gave birth to the singles “Blow,” “Nice Girl,” “Invitation,” starring Kodie Shane, and “No Brainer.”
In July 2019, Ashnikko came out with her third extended play titled “Hi It’s Me.” The promotional single “Special” was released before the extended play (EP), while “Hi It’s Me,” the EP’s title track and lead single, was released simultaneously with the EP. The song climbed to the top spot on the charts for the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100, the Billboard Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop, and the Spotify Viral 50. In addition, “Stupid” was awarded gold certification in Canada and the United States in the month of August 2020. Another track on the EP called “Working Bitch” became famous on TikTok and was one of its most-played songs. In October of 2019, Ashnikko kicked up a tour across North America serving as an opening act for American rapper Danny Brown.
In the month of October 2019, she disseminated the promotional single titled “Halloween II: Pumpkin Spice.” On Brooke Candy’s debut album, titled Sexorcism, which was published in October 2019, she contributed to the writing of eight of the tracks, including two that featured her as a featured artist. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, Ashnikko was set to accompany Doja Cat on her Hot Pink Tour around the United States in March 2020. However, the tour had to be canceled because of the epidemic.
