Austin Idol Bio, Life, and Career:

Austin Idol eventually became a professional wrestler.  Before making his debut as a wrestler at the beginning of 1972 under the ring name Dennis McCord, he worked as a referee for Graham’s Championship Wrestling from Florida, a promotion that was based in Florida. After wrestling in Florida up until the middle of 1972, McCord worked briefly for Nick Gulas’ NWA Mid-America promotion in Alabama before signing on with Jim Crockett Promotions, which was situated in the Carolinas. In the latter half of 1972 and the first few months of 1973, McCord made an appearance with World Championship Wrestling in Sydney, Australia.

While there, he and Jimmy Golden won a tournament to become the first-ever NWA Austra-Asian Tag Team Champions (they forfeited the titles in January 1973). In March of 1973, McCord became a member of Vincent J. McMahon’s World Wide Wrestling Federation, which was centered in the northeastern part of the United States. It was there that he took on the new identity of “Iron” Mike McCord and was assigned Lou Albano as his manager.  In a famous match that took place in Madison Square Garden in New York City in July 1973, McCord went off against Chief Jay Strongbow. Albano interfered in the match by slamming a cast on Strongbow’s forehead while Strongbow had McCord in a sleeper hold.

Although McCord was disqualified from the match, Strongbow suffered serious injuries as a result of Albano’s assaults. During his time with the WWWF, McCord competed largely on the mid-card despite the fact that he made multiple attempts to challenge Pedro Morales for the WWWF Championship but was ultimately unsuccessful.  McCord continued to work for the WWWF until January 1974, when he decided to relocate to Florida because he did not enjoy the bitterly cold weather in the northeast. Idol went back to competing for Southeastern Championship Wrestling in Birmingham, Alabama, towards the middle of the year 1982.

He won the NWA Alabama Heavyweight Championship under mysterious circumstances, but he ultimately lost the belt to Wayne Ferris in September of 1982. His stint as a champion of the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship (Northern Division) ended for mysterious reasons, despite the fact that he had won the title in December 1982. Idol wrestled NWA World Heavyweight Champion Ric Flair, who was in town from the United States to a draw in December of 1982. In May of 1983, Idol competed against Flair once more, but he was unable to win the title. In February of 1983, Idol made his way back to the Continental Wrestling Association, and almost immediately after his comeback, he has crowned the first-ever AWA International Heavyweight Champion.

He was defeated by Lawler the next month when Lawler once again attacked him with a fireball during the match that resulted in him losing the title. During the summer of 1983, Idol changed his strategy and began cooperating with Lawler. n August of 1983, Jerry Lawler and Eddie Idol defeated The Assassins to win the CWA World Tag Team Championship. However, The Assassins were able to win back the championship a week later. Idol won the AWA International Heavyweight Championship for the second time by defeating Ken Patera in September 1983. However, he was only able to hold onto the championship for two days before losing it to Stan Hansen.

In October, Idol defeated Hansen in a bull rope match to reclaim his title as champion. Idol and Dutch Mantell won the CWA World Tag Team Championship in November 1983 by defeating The Midnight Express. Idol and Dutch Mantell went on to discreetly relinquish their title later on. Idol’s third reign as AWA International Heavyweight Champion lasted until April 1984, when he was defeated by Randy Savage. Savage was the man who ended Idol’s title reign. Idol was able to win back the championship from Savage in May, but then Masao Ito won it away from him in June of 1984. Around the middle of 1984, Idol departed the CWA once more.

Idol competed again at the Southeastern Championship Wrestling tournament in Alabama in July 1984. After a match against Vic Rain in August 1984, he successfully defended his NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship (Northern Division) title and won it for a second time. Up to November 1984, when he was defeated by Jimmy Golden, he was the champion of the world.  Idol won the NWA Alabama Heavyweight Championship by virtue of a victory against Lord Humongous in March 1985; however, Idol surrendered the championship to Lord Humongous in April 1985.

Idol won the NWA Southeastern Heavyweight Championship (Northern Division) for the third time after defeating Jimmy Golden in July 1985. His fourth and final reign came to an end in August 1985 when he was defeated by Adrian Street. Later on, in the same month, Idol walked away from Southeastern Championship Wrestling once more. Idol returned to Japan in August and September 1987 as a part of All Japan Pro Wrestling’s “Summer Action Series II,” which was the second time the band had toured the country with AJPW. Idol and Stan Hansen were given the opportunity to compete for the vacant PWF World Tag Team Championship upon their arrival in AJPW.
