Avery Trufelman Bio, Life, and Career:
Avery Trufelman is an American podcaster and radio producer best known for her work on 99% Invisible (2013–2020) and its spin-off, Articles of Interest (2018–present) (2018–present). Born into a “radio family” of two WNYC producers, Trufelman was raised in Westchester County, New York. She attended Wesleyan University, graduating in 2013 with degrees in German and Literature. While at Wesleyan, she worked at the school radio station WESU. After graduating, she interned with the now-defunct NPR Berlin in Germany.
During her stint with NPR, Trufelman worked with 99% Invisible, eventually becoming the show’s third full-time producer (following Sam Greenspan and creator Roman Mars), a position she would retain until her retirement in 2020. In 2022, she reappeared for a single episode as “producer emeritus”. In 2018, Trufelman spearheaded 99% Invisible’s first offshoot series, Items of Interest, which explores the origins of clothing pieces and fashion subcultures. The New Yorker called the first season the fourth-best podcast of 2018 and the second season the sixth-best podcast of 2020.
Vulture picked the season one conclusion, “Punk”, the greatest podcast episode of 2018. [8] She made the announcement of her resignation from 99% Invisible after the conclusion of the show’s second season. The following year, following the completion of the transaction in which 99% Invisible was sold to Sirius XM, Mars ceded ownership of Articles of Interest to Trufelman. She developed the third season of the web series American Ivy, which is a serialized history of preppy fashion, on her own. While a survey of industry creatives conducted by Vulture ranked it as the third-best podcast of 2022, The New Yorker ranked it as the sixth-best podcast of 2022.
In 2019, Trufelman was hired by Vox Media’s Curbed to serve as the host of the show Nice Attempt! The first season, titled “Utopian,” examines several failed attempts at utopia throughout history, such as Jamestown, Virginia, and Biosphere 2. The second season of the show, titled Interior, made its debut in 2021 and chronicled the evolution of a variety of homemaking implements, such as the vacuum cleaner and the crock-pot. Following her retirement from 99% Invisible in 2020, Trufelman started presenting the relaunch of New York’s The Cut podcast. Concurrently, she relocated from Oakland to Brooklyn as part of this process. Some of the people that came to visit her were the comic Allison Bechdel, the screenwriter Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, and the author Michelle Zauner. In 2021, Trufelman departed his role as head writer for The Cut to return to his roles on Nice Try! and Articles of Interest.
