Baker Mayfield Bio, Life, and Career:

Baker Reagan Mayfield is a quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League (NFL). He was born on April 14, 1995, and his full birth name is Baker Reagan Mayfield. After spending some time with Texas Tech University, Baker Mayfield went on to play college football at the University of Oklahoma. It was there that he became the first walk-on player to ever win the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 2017. Mayfield earned the trophy in 2017. During the 2018 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns chose him with the first pick of the entire draft.

In Mayfield’s first game as a starter for the Browns, the team broke a 19-game losing run and established a record for most throwing touchdowns by a rookie quarterback in the National Football League. His most successful season was in 2020, when he led the Browns to their first playoff participation since 2002 and their first playoff victory since 1994. This was his third year as the head coach of the Browns.

In 2022, the Browns decided to trade Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers because of his poor play over the next season as well as his feud with the team’s administration. Near the end of the season, the Panthers cut ties with him due to his continued poor play and injuries, and he went on to finish the year with the Los Angeles Rams after being signed by them. In preparation for the 2023 campaign, Mayfield signed with the Buccaneers.

Mayfield was the younger of the two sons that James and Gina Mayfield welcomed into the world on April 14, 1995, in the city of Austin, Texas. During the senior year of his younger son’s high school, James, who works as a consultant for private equity, ran into some financial troubles. Due to the difficulties they were experiencing, the Mayfields were forced to sell their family home and migrate from one rental property to another.

Mayfield was born and raised an Oklahoma Sooners supporter, and he even made it out to a few of their games when he was a kid. Although he spent three years playing football at the University of Houston, his father was never awarded a letter of recognition for his efforts.

Mayfield was the starting quarterback for the football team representing Lake Travis High School in Austin. The Cavaliers played football. In his two years as head coach for Lake Travis, the team won the 2011 4A State Championship and finished with a record of 25–2 overall. Following the conclusion of his high school football career, he finished with a total of 6,255 passing yards, 67 touchdowns, and eight interceptions.

Mayfield was only offered scholarships by Florida Atlantic, New Mexico, North Texas, Rice, Sam Houston State, and Wyoming. However, he received preferred walk-on offers from Baylor, Texas Tech, and Washington State. Mayfield was rated as a 3-star recruit and received light recruitment.

Mayfield was given the starting quarterback job just prior to the beginning of the 2013 season after it was discovered that the projected starter, former Lake Travis quarterback Michael Brewer, would be unable to play due to a back injury. Mayfield is the first quarterback in FBS history to start an opening game of a season as a true freshman after having participated in the walk-on program.

Mayfield completed passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns in his debut game, which was played against SMU. His 43 completions out of 60 attempts broke a school record that was previously set by Billy Joe Tolliver. He also came within four completions of breaking the single-game record for most completions by a freshman in NCAA Division I FBS, which was previously held by Luke McCown.

As a result of his performance, Mayfield was selected as the Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week. He is the first freshman quarterback to be selected as Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Week for Texas Tech since Kliff Kingsbury in 1999, who was the Red Raiders’ head coach back then. Mayfield, Garrett Gilbert, Michael Brewer, and Collin Lagasse were the last four former Lake Travis quarterbacks to compete in the game, and they were spread out over both teams.

Mayfield’s 780 season yards and seven touchdowns have now surpassed the 755 season yards and six touchdowns that Texas Tech’s previous true freshman quarterback, Aaron Keesee, accumulated in 10 games for the Red Raiders. Mayfield’s accomplishments came after the Red Raiders’ second victory over Stephen F. Austin. Mayfield concluded the season with 2,315 yards on 218 of 340 completions, 12 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. This was despite the fact that he suffered a knee injury and lost his starting spot to fellow true freshman Davis Webb.

In November, Mayfield was selected as one of the 10 semifinalists for the Burlsworth Trophy, which is given to the finest player in Division I football who began his college career as a walk-on. The Burlsworth Trophy is presented annually at the end of the college football season.

During the 2013 season, Mayfield was named the Freshman Offensive Player of the Year for the Big 12 Conference. Mayfield stated that he would be quitting the program because of “miscommunication” with the coaching staff. This was the reason given. Mayfield had been playing for Texas Tech when he decided to transfer to the University of Oklahoma in January 2014.

However, he did not get in touch with the Sooner’s coaching staff before making the move. Mayfield went on to expand in an interview with ESPN on why he wanted to move schools. He stated that he felt he had earned the starting position and that further competition was not “really fair.” Mayfield felt that he had earned the starting position and that further competition was not “really fair.” The allegations about scholarship difficulties were refuted by Kliff Kingsbury, the head coach at Texas Tech.

Mayfield was given his first start for the Browns in their following game, which resulted in a loss to the Oakland Raiders by a score of 45–42 after overtime.
