Bart Campolo Bio, Life, and Career:

Bart Campolo was born on April 2, 1963, Bart Campolo was born in the city of Philadelphia. Karl Barth, a Swiss Calvinist theologian, was the inspiration for his name. Haverford College was Campolo’s first stop after transferring to Brown University for his Bachelor of Arts in Religious Studies degree. Following the publication of his article titled “The Limits of God’s Grace” in The Journal of Student Ministries, Bart Campolo became the subject of some heated debate. Which contends that God is not present in control of the universe and will eventually completely triumph over evil, was regarded as heretical by many members of the evangelical community, most notably by Christianity Today, which drew comparisons between Campolo and Ivan Karamazov.

Campolo was forced to come to terms with his developing loss of belief after he was involved in a bike accident during the summer of 2011. Since that time, he has said that he does not believe in God anymore and has instead converted to a secular humanist philosophy. Campolo came to the conclusion that “He’d assist [people] understand that we’re all going to die, that this life is all there is and that consequently, we had to make the most of our brief, magnificent time here on earth,” and he set out to do so. Campolo abandoned his prior Christian convictions in favor of a more secular humanist outlook, but he never stopped helping others who were in need of assistance.

He did this by applying the tools of the trade that he had honed during his time as a Christian minister. At the University of Southern California, he was the first humanist to ever hold the position of chaplain. Campolo gave a rousing speech to students on a college campus in 2014, in which he expounded on how to successfully persuade Christians and other religious people toward humanism in the following manner: “The question that we need to be asking is not, ‘How do we prove that they’re wrong?’ but it’s, ‘How do we offer people the same values that all people want, but how do we offer those values, not supported by ancient myths or by the supernatural fairytale.

Mission Year is an urban Christian ministry program that was established by Campolo and his wife, Marty, in the year 1999. Kingdom works, which was their initial organization, and the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, which was Campolo’s father’s organization, merged to form this new organization. The cities of Chicago, Houston, and Philadelphia are now being served by Mission Year. In order to disseminate their message and work toward bettering the lives of those who are economically disadvantaged, members of the group “live, work, and establish deliberate relationships in underserved neighborhoods.”Both week-long and year-long commitments are available through the organization known as Mission Year.

After telling his famous evangelical father that he no longer believes in God, Bart has been carrying on a conversation with him ever since he made the revelation to him. They have also written a book together, titled Exploring the Issues at the Heart of This Conversation, and in 2018, a documentary film titled Leaving My Father’s Faith was released, which tells the story of Bart’s journey away from his father’s faith and features the conversations that took place between the two of them. On October 1, 2009, Campolo presented a lecture at the inaugural Talent Academy teaching event that was held in Richmond, Virginia.

During the course of the discussion, he shared accounts of individuals in Cincinnati, Ohio, whom he had assisted, in addition to some personal confessions concerning the nature of his relationship with the person with whom he was working. Campolo has also delivered speeches at a number of atheist and secular gatherings, some of which include Sunday Assembly Los Angeles, Houston Oasis, Atheist Community of San Jose, Secular Student Alliance, and Atheists United.

The podcast Humanize Me!, which Campolo hosts, was initially distributed for the first time on February 1, 2016. His ongoing efforts to persuade individuals to help others without regard for themselves are the primary focus of this episode. As of the month of April 2018, Campolo has released a total of 65 episodes of the Humanize Me! podcast. Before making the move away from Christianity and toward humanism as a secular philosophy, he served as a pastor and is the son of Tony Campolo. Tony Campolo is one of the co-founders of Mission Year and the author of a number of books, including Kingdom Works: True Stories of God and His People in Inner City America and Things We Wish We Had Said, the latter of which he wrote with his father.

Campolo has also served as a missionary in a number of countries around the world. His most recent book, Why I Left, Why I Stayed, is a meditation on both men’s “spiritual odysseys and how they matured when their paths separated.” This book was also co-written by his father. Campolo is well-known for his rousing lectures directed at young people, particularly those aimed at persuading them to become more involved in the communities surrounding their urban homes. At the University of Southern California, he was the first Humanist Chaplain to ever serve there. Humanize Me is the name of the podcast that Campolo hosts.
