Big Dipper Bio, Life, and Career:

Big Dipper is the stage name that Dan Stermer, an American rapper, and podcaster, uses for his professional work. Stermer spent his childhood in Evanston, which is located in Illinois. His mother is of Jewish heritage, but his father follows the Christian faith. Stermer was brought up in a Jewish family and went to Sunday school at a Reform synagogue throughout his childhood. When he was eight years old, he made his debut onstage in a play of The Wizard of Oz that was put on by a children’s theatre. Before determining that he would rather perform, Stermer experimented with playing a number of instruments, including the cello, piano, trumpet, tuba, and drums.

At the age of nine, he first started getting into hip-hop and rap music. In the eighth grade, he celebrated his bar mitzvah, and in the tenth grade, after completing more Jewish studies coursework, he was confirmed. Stermer received his bachelor’s degree in theatre from Ithaca College in 2007, where he also earned his diploma. In 1985, guitarist Gary Waleik and bassist Steve Michener left the original lineup of Volcano Suns, which they’d formed with drummer and vocalist Peter Prescott after the breakup of Prescott’s earlier band Mission of Burma. Both Walk and Michener were uneasy with the prospect of taking on lead vocal responsibilities, so they turned to singer and guitarist Bill Goffrier for help.

Goffrier had relocated to Boston after his previous band, the Lawrence, Kansas-based indie pioneers the Embarrassment, disbanded in 1983. Waleik and Michener recruited Goffrier. Big Dipper’s first EP, Boo-Boo, was recorded in 1987 at the soon-to-be-famous Fort Apache Studios. After completing their lineup with a local drummer named Jeff Oliphant, who had previously played in an early lineup of Dumptruck, the band did some gigging around Boston and Cambridge for a while before recording their first EP.

Boo-Boo was well-received on both the local and national indie scenes, beginning with the killer “Faith Healer” (a song that Goffrier had brought with him from the final days of the Embarrassment and that would prove to be one of Big Dipper’s most popular tunes, even getting covered by Shonen Knife). Even more, praise was heaped upon the full-length version of Heavens when it was issued later that same year (without duplicating any of the content from the EP, which was included in the CD issue). Heavens is one of the best albums released by American independent artists during its time period. It is a superb mix of sunny power pop, neo-psychedelia, and indie rock angst, and it features such standout tracks as “She’s Fetching” and “All Going Out Together.”
