Bill Duke was born on February 26, 1943, in Poughkeepsie, New York, USA, to parents William Henry Duke Sr. and Ethel Louise Duke. Bill Duke was named after his grandfather. After receiving his diploma from ‘Franklin D. Roosevelt High School’ in Hyde Park, he enrolled in ‘Dutchess Community College’ in Poughkeepsie, where he studied creative writing and performing arts. He eventually graduated from that institution.

After completing his studies at ‘Dutchess Community College,’ he continued his education at ‘Boston University’ in the state of Massachusetts. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a concentration in acting and graduated with honors. After that, he went on to receive training in the performing arts at institutions such as the ‘AFI Conservatory’ and the ‘Tisch School of Arts’ before making his debut on Broadway in 1971.
