Bozoma Saint John Bio, Life, and Career:
Bozoma The Reverend Dr. Appianda Arthur and Aba Arthur (née Enim) welcomed their son on January 21, 1977, and they named him Saint John. Some believe she was born in Ghana, but others say she was born in the United States and brought to Ghana when she was six months old. No matter the reason, in 1991 she relocated to Colorado Springs with her parents and three younger sisters. Her father played the clarinet and was a lawmaker in Ghana from 1979 to 1981. He also served in the Ghanaian armed forces. He moved to the United States and attended Wesleyan University, where he earned a doctorate in ethnomusicology.
Saint John credits her father as her primary source of motivation, and she followed in his academic footsteps by earning a BA in African American Studies and English from Wesleyan in 1999. When she was working for PepsiCo, she met her future husband, Peter Saint John. Unfortunately, Peter lost his battle with Burkitt lymphoma in 2013. Lael Saint John was the couple’s daughter. She and Lael relocated to Los Angeles from New York City when her husband died.
Earlier in her career, Bozoma Saint John held a variety of low-paying occupations. The Boston-based advertising agency Arnold Worldwide was her first major employer. She started as the senior account executive for director Spike Lee’s Brooklyn, New York-based advertising agency Spike DDB in the year 2000.
In March of 2005, she received a life-changing job offer from PepsiCo, where she eventually became the company’s Senior Marketing Manager. She was willing to embrace and eventually implement reforms that kept the global conglomerate relevant in the new millennium. She proposed the division of Music and Entertainment Marketing, which has been instrumental in the firm’s successful sponsorship of music festivals and award events, allowing it to tap into the vast markets associated with the music industry. It’s no surprise that she was promoted to the department head, where she stayed for the next decade.
Saint John previously worked for Ashley Stewart, a fashion and lifestyle business for plus-size women, as vice president of marketing and e-commerce from November 2009 to January 2011. Jimmy Iovine, Beats Music’s co-founder and chairman of the board, personally recruited her to lead the company’s marketing efforts because of her extensive background in the music business.
After Apple Inc.’s 2014 acquisition of Beats Music and Beats Electronics for $3 billion in cash and shares, Saint John was swiftly elevated to lead Apple’s Global Consumer Marketing Division for Apple Music and iTunes. She did wonderfully in that position and made important contributions to Apple’s ongoing success in the computer industry. She had the idea for the viral Apple advertisement starring Taraji P. Henson, Mary J. Blige, and Kerry Washington. And she was the one who orchestrated Beyoncé’s legendary halftime show at Super Bowl XLVII.
Poaching charges surfaced after Saint John left Apple for Uber in June 2017, but she strongly refuted them. She started working at an international transportation technology firm during a time of great change. Founder Travis Kalanick stepped down after claims of sexual harassment surfaced. She decided to join Uber as its Chief Branding Officer after discussing the company with Kalanick and Arianna Huffington, co-founder of The Huffington Post and Uber board member.
A member of the American Advertising Hall of Achievement Class of 2014, Saint John was admitted that year. Originally from Ghana, Bozoma “Boz” A. Saint John (née Arthur) is now a successful business leader in the United States. Formerly a marketing executive at Apple, she is now Uber’s Chief Brand Officer. Saint John was an immigrant to the United States who grew up believing in the American dream and harboring great ambitions for himself.
After finishing school, she went right into the workforce. At the outset of her career, she worked in a variety of roles at ad firms before becoming the interim VP of Marketing at Ashley Stewart. She joined PepsiCo in 2005 as the senior marketing manager, where she oversaw the company’s first foray into marketing at music festivals. A decade later, she joined Beats Music, a subscription-based online music streaming business that was eventually acquired by Apple Inc., where she helped revolutionize and redefine numerous industry practices.
Saint John’s career skyrocketed, and he was soon named head of worldwide consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music. After meeting with Arianna Huffington and Travis Kalanick, then CEO of Uber, she decided to take the position of Chief Branding Officer in 2017. Her goal is to make Uber as well-known as Apple.
