Bret Easton Ellis Bio, Life, and Career:

Bret Easton Ellis is a well-known American author, screenplay, short-story writer, and director. He was born on March 7, 1964, in the United States. In the beginning, Ellis was considered to be a member of the so-called literary Brat Pack. He is someone who considers themselves to be a satirist. The strategy that he uses most frequently in his writing is the expression of extreme deeds and opinions in a manner that is emotionless.

Characters from his previous works frequently appear in his new ones. At the age of 21, Ellis saw the publication of his debut novel, the controversial best-seller Less than Zero (1985), which was released by Simon & Schuster. His third novel, published in 1991 and titled American Psycho, was his most commercially successful work. Upon its initial publication, the literary community as a whole denounced it, claiming that it was excessively violent and misogynistic.

Despite the fact that Ellis was dumped by Simon & Schuster as a result of the numerous petitions to have the book banned,[5] the overwhelming uproar convinced Alfred A. Knopf to print it as a paperback later that year. The novels written by Ellis are becoming more and more metafictional. The pseudo-memoir and ghost story Lunar Park (2005), which has been praised by critics, was published in 2005. Imperial Bedrooms (2010), which was marketed as a sequel to Less than Zero and continues in the same vein as its predecessor, also continues in the same vein.

The Shards (2023) is a work of fiction that is based on Ellis’s memoir of his senior year of high school, which took place in Los Angeles in 1981. A total of four of Ellis’s books have been adapted into motion pictures. The novel Less than Zero was turned into a movie with the same name in 1987, however, the movie was very different from the book. In the year 2000, Mary Harron’s adaptation of the novel American Psycho was made available to the public. The Rules of Attraction was adapted by Roger Avary and made available to the public in the year 2002. The Informers, a novel that Ellis co-wrote and that was published in 2008, was based on a collection of short stories that Ellis had previously authored.

Ellis was raised in the town of Sherman Oaks, which is located in the San Fernando Valley. He was born in Los Angeles in 1964. His father, Robert Martin Ellis, worked in real estate development, while his mother, Dale Ellis (née Dennis), was a homemaker. Robert Martin Ellis was the patriarch of the family. In 1982, they got a divorce. Ellis said that his father was an abusive person during the initial release of his third novel, American Psycho. He also stated that Patrick Bateman, the most well-known character in the book, was based on his father. Later on, Ellis asserted that the character was not in fact based on his father but on Ellis himself.

He stated that all of his work sprang from a particular location of suffering that Ellis was going through in his life during the time that he was writing each of his works. Ellis asserts that despite the fact that his family life was somewhat challenging when he was growing up as a result of the divorce, he primarily had an “idyllic” childhood in California. Ellis received his education at The Buckley School in California.

He went on to attend Bennington College in Vermont, where he initially studied music but eventually gravitated toward writing, which had been one of his passions ever since he was a child. Ellis is known for his work in the fields of music and writing. There, he made the acquaintance of future authors Jonathan Lethem and Donna Tartt, who both went on to have writing careers of their own. Ellis also completed a novel that he had been working on for a number of years while he was a student at Bennington College.

Ellis rose to celebrity almost immediately after the publication of his book, Less than Zero, which came out when he was 21 years old and he was still attending college. Amanda Urban, a literary agency, is in charge of representing Ellis. After the critical acclaim and controversy surrounding the publication of Less than Zero in 1985, Bret Easton Ellis became close friends and closely associated with fellow Brat Pack author Jay McInerney.

Together, the two became known as the “toxic twins” for the highly publicized late-night debauchery that they engaged in. After the publication of American Psycho (1991), which was later hailed as a critical and cult success, particularly after the film adaptation that was released in 2000, Ellis was ostracised for a period of time. It is currently considered Ellis’s magnum opus, and it has received recognition from a variety of academics.

During Glamorama’s extensive writing career, the author pitched the novel The Informers (1994) to one of his publishers. Ellis penned a screenplay for the movie adaptation of The Rules of Attraction, but the script was ultimately scrapped. In the opening chapter of Lunar Park, he writes down a dramatized account of his entire story up until this point. This chapter is set in Lunar Park (2005). Ellis was inspired to finish writing Lunar Park after the passing of his boyfriend Michael Wade Kaplan, and he gave the novel a new, more wistful tone as a result of his newfound melancholy.
