Brian Dawkins Bio, Life and Career:

Brian Patrick Dawkins Sr., also known as “Weapon X,” is a former professional football player from the United States. He played safety for 16 seasons in the National Football League (NFL), predominantly with the Philadelphia Eagles. Dawkins was born on October 13, 1973, and his nickname is “Weapon X.” After graduating from Clemson University with a degree in football, he was chosen by the Philadelphia Eagles in the second round of the 1996 NFL Draft. He finished his career with the Denver Broncos, where he played for three seasons.

During his career, Dawkins was selected to play in nine Pro Bowls and five All-Pro first teams, and he is widely regarded as one of the best safeties of all time. In addition, he was regarded as the leader of the Eagles’ defense. In addition, he played in the Super Bowl once with the Eagles, which took place in his hometown of Jacksonville, Florida, during the XIX edition of the game.

In addition to his playing career, Dawkins worked for the Eagles from 2016 to 2018 as an executive of football operations for player development. During that time, the team won Super Bowl LII while he was a member of the Eagles organization. 2018 marked the year that he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Dawkins received his education from Clemson University, which is located in Clemson, South Carolina. He played free safety for the Clemson Tigers football team for three years and concluded his career with 247 tackles and 11 interceptions. He was a starter at free safety for three years. After finishing his senior year with a team-high six interceptions and a share of the league lead, he was named to the second team of All-Americans by the Associated Press and Sporting News. In 1995, he was honored as a member of the ACC’s first team All-league Team.

In 1996, he was picked for Clemson’s all-centennial squad and was honored with a spot on the first team as a strong safety. In 2009, he was inducted into Clemson’s Athletic Hall of Fame. Clemson University established the Brian Dawkins Lifetime Achievement Award on January 11, 2013, with the intention of honoring a former Clemson player on an annual basis for their achievements on the field as well as their contributions in the areas of leadership and community service.

During the 1996 National Football League Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Dawkins in the second round (61st overall). Dawkins was the fifth safety to be selected in the draft in the year 1996. The Philadelphia Eagles used a compensatory pick that they obtained as a result of Seth Joyner leaving the team via free agency in 1994 in order to choose Dawkins in the draft.

When Dawkins reported for training camp, it was expected that he would serve as the free safety backup to Eric Zomalt, who had been given the starting role following Greg Jackson’s departure via free agency. Dawkins will begin the regular season serving as Eric Zomalt’s backup free safety after being given that role by head coach Ray Rhodes.

He played in the first game of the professional regular season for the Philadelphia Eagles, which was a victory over the Washington Redskins by a score of 17–14, and he made his debut with the team. The next week, Dawkins made the first start of his professional career and tied the season high with 11 combined tackles in a loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2, which ended with a score of 39-13.

On September 18, 1996, head coach Ray Rhodes officially announced that Dawkins would be starting at free safety alongside strong safety Mike Zordich. This came about as a result of Dawkins passing Eric Zomalt on the depth chart. The following day, Zomalt was eventually made available to the public. During the Atlanta Falcons Week 4 game on September 22, 1996, Dawkins produced four combined tackles and made his first interception of his career. The Falcons’ game ended with a 33–18 victory.

In the fourth quarter, Dawkins made his first interception of his career off of a pass thrown by the Falcons’ backup quarterback Bobby Hebert. The pass was meant for wide receiver Bert Emanuel, but Dawkins intercepted it and returned it for a gain of 30 yards, which ultimately led to the Eagles’ triumph. During the Eagles’ game against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 5, he recorded eight combined tackles, forced a turnover, and made his first sack of his career in the Cowboys’ 23–19 victory.

During the third quarter of the game, Dawkins recorded his first sack of his career on Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman. During the same play, Dawkins also stole the ball from Aikman. Rhett Hall, who plays on Dawkins’ squad, was the one to collect the ball and score the touchdown after returning it 32 yards.

At the end of his rookie season in 1996, he finished with a total of 75 tackles, three interceptions, a sack, and a forced fumble. He played in 14 games and started 13 of those games. Although they had the 21st-ranked defense in the league as a whole, the Philadelphia Eagles allowed the sixth-fewest passing yards in 1996, which was 2,979 total yards.
