According to an interview, his ancestors are from the Michoacán town of Los Reyes, where he was born. His family moved to Juanacatlán, Jalisco when he was five years old. Rigoberto Alvarez, his older brother, had already made a name for himself as a boxer before he came along.

All of Alvarez’s siblings entered the sport of boxing as well. His brothers, Ramón and Ricardo Alvarez are both professional boxers in the welterweight division. When he was a kid, Alvarez learned how to ride a horse. “Canelo” is the Spanish word meaning “cinnamon” for men.

The Mexican actress and former “Miss Mexico Universe” 2003 Marisol González was his long-term girlfriend at the time of their engagement. Alvarez has a child from a previous relationship with an ex-girlfriend.

After that, he won the ‘Junior Mexican National Boxing’ title for 2005. He got professional as soon as this happened. Alvarez was a talented boxer from the start of his professional career, winning all of his fights.

He had victories over players like Miguel Vázquez and Francisco Villanueva, but a draw with Jorge Juarez was his only loss in the competition. On August 31, 2007, he won his first professional title after defeating Mexican boxer Ricardo Cano and claiming the ‘Jalisco’ welterweight belt. This time, on March 14, he beat Mexican boxer Francisco Villanueva to keep the belt.

He defeated Mexican boxer Gabriel Martinez on April 18, 2008, to win the ‘WBA Fedecentro’ welterweight title. In August 2008, he defeated Argentine boxer Carlos Adán Jerez to retain his title. On February 21, 2009, he defeated Dominican Republic boxer Euri González to retain his welterweight belts in the NABF and WBO Latino divisions. On September 14, 2013, Alvarez took on Floyd Mayweather Jr., who was recognized by ‘The Ring’ magazine as the “numero uno” light middleweight and the unified “WBC/WBA regular” champion.

When it mattered most, Alvarez was fighting for the “WBA (Unified),” “WBC,” and “The Ring” light-middleweight championships. This was also Alvarez’s first defeat in his professional baseball life. The defeat did not dampen lvarez’s spirit, however, as he went on to win three more fights against three different opponents before defeating Puerto Rican boxer Miguel Cotto on November 21, 2015, to win ‘The Ring,’ the lineal, and the vacant ‘WBC’ middleweight belts.

On May 7th, 2016, he defeated British boxer Amir Khan and successfully defended his belts. After that, he moved up to light-middleweight and won the ‘WBO’ title on September 17 of the same year by defeating British boxer, Liam Smith. The WBA (Super), IBF, and vacant lineal middleweight title fight between Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin on September 16, 2017, finished in a split draw, with Alvarez retaining ‘The Ring’ middleweight championship. The WBA (Super), WBC, The Ring, and lineal middleweight titles were all won by Alvarez after a hard-fought victory over Golovkin on September 15, 2018.

The bout, on the other hand, remains divisive among boxing fans, journalists, and analysts. “DAZN” stated that they had inked a five-year deal worth $365 million with Alvarez on October 17, 2018, and that the streaming service would show 11 more fights for him in the United States. ‘HBO’ took over from Alvarez’s expired contract as part of the agreement.

On December 15, 2018, Alvarez defeated British boxer Rocky Fielding to earn the ‘WBA (Regular)’ super middleweight title. Against Daniel Jacobs of the United States on May 4, 2019, he was victorious and retained his ‘IBF’ middleweight title, as well as his other belts from WBA (Super), WBC, and “The Ring.” Alvarez, a talented boxer, also serves as a spokesman for the sport in his native Mexico.
