Cara Augustenborg Bio, Life and Career:

Cara Aisling Augustenborg, who was born in 1978, is a member of the Irish Council of State, an environmental scientist with dual citizenship in the United States and Ireland, a blogger, and a podcaster. She is also an Environmental Policy Fellow at University College Dublin. Augustenborg was born in 1978 in Germany, where her father, who is of Danish descent and served as a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force, was stationed. Augustenborg’s mother is originally from County Kerry, Ireland. She spent her childhood in Pennsylvania, Saudi Arabia, and New Orleans before her family finally settled down in the area surrounding the Hanford Site, a nuclear power plant in the state of Washington, United States, where she attended high school.

During this time, she moved around quite a bit. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biochemistry from the University of Washington, a Master of Science degree in Environmental Health Sciences from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Environmental Science and Engineering from that same institution. Nitrogen recycling for the sustainability of Irish agriculture was the topic of her dissertation, which she completed in 2007. Irwin Suffet served as the chair of her committee. She received a Fulbright Scholarship in 2003 and moved to Ireland in order to conduct research at Teagasc in County Wexford. Three years later, she moved to Dublin in order to conduct post-doctoral research at the School of Business at Trinity College Dublin and the School of Agriculture at University College Dublin.

Cara was recognized as one of the 20 most influential people to drive Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy by the Sunday Independent and GreenNews in the year 2016.
