Cara Carriveau Bio, Life and Career:

Cara Carriveau was born in Detroit, Michigan, but spent much of her childhood in West Bloomfield, also in the state of Michigan. While she was a student at Central Michigan University, she got her first work in the radio industry using her maiden name Cara Stern at a station called 95.3 “The New Foxy 95” WCFX in Clare, Michigan. The station is located in Michigan. She began her career at WCFX in 1986 as a weekend overnight/fill-in personality and was quickly elevated to weekend middays (10 am – 3 pm), then full-time evenings (7 pm–midnight), and ultimately middays (10 am – 2 pm) and Production Director. She was employed in 1986.

In 1989, she started hosting overnights at 103.9 WABT “The Wabbit” in Dundee, Illinois, using the stage name Cara Simms when she was on the air there. After only a year, she was promoted to hosting nights from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m., and after only another year, she began hosting middays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and she also became Assistant Program Director.  In 1992, she was given the position of Program Director, and in order to accommodate her new job, she reduced the length of her on-air shift from 10 am to noon.

She stayed at WABT until the year 1995 when it was announced that the station would be put up for sale. In 1995, she accepted the position of Program Director for Shadow Broadcast Services in Chicago, Illinois, using the name Cara Carriveau, which she had recently adopted after getting married. Carriveau made the decision to follow her interest in interviewing artists, more notably rock stars, during her brief time off the air, during which she spent a significant amount of time caring for her toddler son. Specifically, she wanted to do this. In February of 2007, she launched her podcast under the name Cara’s Basement, which she continues to present to this day.

Carriveau started doing musician interviews for The Chicago Music Guide around the same time he started contributing blog content to The NBC5 Street Team. Beginning in November of 2006, she was heard again on the airways of Chicago radio station WTMX, where she worked weekends and frequently filled in during the week. Following a search that was conducted around the country, Carriveau was selected in July 2008 to host the midday show full-time. She was given the “Best Radio Personality, Major Market” award by the Illinois Broadcasters Association in both 2010 and 2012, earning her the first-place Silver Dome trophy in both years.

After working as the host of the midday shows at 101.9 The MIX for a period of five years, she made the transition on January 14, 2013, to become the nighttime host at sister station 100.3 WILV in Chicago. She was given the position of afternoon drive host in July 2014, and she has remained in that role even after the station’s call letters were changed to WSHE in March 2015. In addition to that, she started blogging for The Local Tourist, and in 2013, she was given the title of “Music X-Pert.”

Anchoring the news and serving as a sidekick on the nationally syndicated Kevin Matthews Morning Show, which broadcast from the studios in the John Hancock Building that belonged to WLUP was one of the responsibilities that came with her position.  Later on, in the same year, Carriveau started working as a weekend host at 95.1 WIIL’s “95 Will Rock” radio show in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After a short period of time, in March of 1996, she took three positions at WIIL that required her to work there simultaneously: morning show sidekick/news anchor, midday presenter (through voice tracking), and Promotion Director.

In addition to that, she started doing weekend shows on “Rock 103.5” WRCX in Chicago, Illinois, during the same period. During this period, Carriveau learned that she was carrying her first child and became excited about being a mother. After the birth of her daughter in 1996, Carriveau decided to stop working full-time at WIIL and instead work part-time at WRCX. This decision gave her the flexibility to devote more time to her role as a mother. She briefly filled in at WTMX hosting evenings and then middays for vacationing radio personalities during the holidays, and then she started working part-time at 97.9 WLUP “The Loop” in January of 1999.

This was after WRCX changed its format in 1998, which resulted in the termination of the entire on-air staff. Within the first two months, she was given a promotion to full-time evening shifts (7 pm to midnight), and then in the year 2000, she was given a promotion to day shifts (9 am – 2 pm). She continued to work at WLUP until 2006 when she was fired after penning a letter to a columnist for the Chicago Sun-Times named Robert Feder, in which she bemoaned the fact that renowned radio personalities are no longer broadcasting.
