Carole Baskin Bio, Life, and Career:
Carole Baskin, also known as Carole Stairs Jones and earlier as Carole Murdock, is an American animal rights activist and the Chief Executive Officer of Big Cat Rescue, a non-profit animal sanctuary located near Tampa in the state of Florida. Baskin was born on June 6, 1961. She has succeeded in bringing the suffering of large animals held in captivity to the attention of local, national, and international media outlets. Baskin came to the attention of the public when she was included in the real crime documentary series Tiger King, which will premiere on Netflix in 2020. The series follows Baskin’s increasing dispute with Joe Exotic, who owns an Oklahoma-based private zoo. In the third episode of the series, it was speculated that Baskin was involved in the disappearance of Don Lewis, who was her second husband.
Following the release of the series, Baskin was subjected to harassment on the internet because of this episode. In a post that was made on the website of Big Cat Rescue, Baskin rejected these assertions. As a direct result of the film Tiger King, her slogan, “Hey, all you cool cats and kittens!,” has since evolved into a meme. In addition, Baskin is famous for her performance on Dancing with the Stars, in which she danced to a rendition of the song “Eye of the Tiger.” Both she and her husband Howard were included in the 2021 documentary Shooting Joe Exotic, which was directed by Louis Theroux. Carole Stairs Jones was born on the Lackland Air Force Base in Bexar County, Texas, on June 6, 1961. Bexar County is located in the state of Texas.
When she was nine years old, she stated that she was interested in helping cats, but after learning that veterinarians put animals to sleep, she chose against pursuing a profession in veterinary medicine. Baskin claims that when she was 14 years old, three males who lived across the street from her house raped her as part of a gang. She also asserts that her devout Christian family did not provide her with any emotional support at this time. After failing to graduate from high school, she ran away with a worker at a nearby roller rink and never looked back. After that, Baskin traveled between Florida to Bangor, Maine by hitchhiking and sleeping underneath parked cars the entire time. She eventually got a Datsun pickup truck, and she and her cat would sleep in the bed of the truck. Baskin got his first job at a retail store when he was 17 years old and lived in Tampa, Florida.
She started a company breeding display cats and using llamas for lawn maintenance so that she could make some extra cash. Baskin tied the knot with her second husband, Don Lewis, in January 1991, and soon after, she joined his real estate firm. In 1992, the couple established Wildlife on Easy Street as an animal sanctuary for large cats in the area surrounding Tampa. Baskin and her husband used to breed tiger cubs and show cats in the past, but they stopped doing so when they realized the suffering they were causing the animals. The sanctuary, which Baskin rebranded as Big Cat Rescue sometime after Lewis vanished in 1997, is still run by Baskin, who holds the position of chief executive officer. Lewis vanished in 1997.
Her campaign against private zoos has been promoted through the use of social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube, as well as her own podcast, “The Cat Chat.” Baskin joined the roster of Dancing with the Stars for its 29th season in the year 2020. On the first episode of the new season, which aired on September 14, she and her dance partner Pasha Pashkov performed a paso doble to the soundtrack of Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger.” They scored a score of 11 out of a possible 30, which was the lowest cumulative score of the evening. Don Lewis was married to Carole for the second time and was successful in the real estate industry.
It is said that he left $5 million in real estate properties as his inheritance after he passed away. As part of the settlement, Carole reportedly handed over one million dollars to Lewis’s daughters, while she retained the rest of the money for herself. In addition, Baskin was given two million dollars from various trusts established by Don Lewis. She received a total of six million dollars from Lewis’s estate. In the end, she was successful in her lawsuit against Joe Exotic, who is best known for his role on Netflix’s The Tiger King, and won a settlement of one million dollars. As a result, it is estimated that her current net worth is greater than 7 million US dollars.
