Charlamagne Tha God Bio, Life, and Career:

Lenard Larry McKelvey, who was born on June 29, 1978, is an American radio host and television personality known professionally as Charlamagne Tha God or simply Charlamagne. His real name is Larry McKelvey. Together with DJ Envy, he hosts the nationally syndicated radio show The Breakfast Club. In recognition of their joint contributions to the show, both DJ Envy and he will be inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in the year 2020. Additionally, he is the host of the late-night chat program Hell of a Week with Charlamagne Tha God, which can be found on Comedy Central. Before he started working at The Breakfast Club, he had a career as a radio personality for a number of different radio stations.

He also had a stint on The Wendy Williams Experience with Wendy Williams on VH1, where he was the second mic. In addition to being the creator of the Black Effect Podcast Network he has also been on the shows Guy Code, Guy Court, and Girl Code. In addition to that, he was a video jockey for the show “The Week in Jams” alongside DJ Envy and Sofi Green. In the year 2015, McKelvey became the host of the show Uncommon Sense on MTV2. In the style of shock jocks, one of McKelvey’s personal mantras is “bite my tongue for no one.” Rolling Stone magazine referred to him as “hip-Howard hop’s Stern.” McKelvey was born in the United States.

On June 29, 1978, McKelvey was born to Larry Thomas McKelvey, a former Jehovah’s Witness who later converted to Islam, and his wife, who was also a Jehovah’s Witness and worked as an English teacher. He spent his childhood in Moncks Corner, South Carolina, where throughout his teenage years he was arrested twice for possession with the intent to distribute cocaine and marijuana. When McKelvey was arrested for the third time, after being in the vicinity of a shooting that did not result in a fatality, his father refused to pay the bail money for his son. After spending 41 days in jail, he approached his mother and requested her to post bail for him.

At that time, his father made the decision to “give him another shot.” Following his release from prison, McKelvey enrolled in evening classes at Berkeley High School and ultimately received his diploma from there (in Moncks Corner). After a party in 2001, McKelvey was accused of committing sexual assault on a woman. He denied having sexual relations with the accuser and cooperated with the authorities, offering DNA evidence that did not support the claim that he had had sex with the victim. The accusation that he had sexual relations with the victim was not supported by the evidence. The allegations of sexual assault were dismissed, and he eventually pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

As a sentence for his guilty plea, he was sentenced to three years of probation. At the beginning of his career in radio, McKelvey worked as an intern for the Z93 Jamz station in Charleston. Additionally, he worked for WHXT while he was in Columbia. In 2006, he moved to New York City to work as the second microphone for radio anchor Wendy Williams. His street name as a drug dealer was “Charles,” and he developed a new persona based on Charlemagne, also known as Charles the Great, who ruled much of Western Europe around the year 800 A.D. He came up with the stage name “Charlamagne,” which was derived from his street name, and he developed a new persona based on Charlemagne. He decided to add “Tha God” to the name because he thought it “sounded great.”

The provocative questions and interviews that he conducted on the radio with hip-hop and R&B singers led to an increase in his public profile, but they also led to tensions between himself and the artists who were being interviewed. In 2008, the television show was canceled, and he lost his job as a result.  Charlamagne and Williams’ relationship deteriorated, despite the fact that Charlamagne has mentioned on the podcast The Breakfast Club that he considers Williams to be a mentor, and that Charlamagne and Williams got back together in 2019. The year 2008 marked the beginning of his tenure as the morning show host for 100.3 The Beat in Philadelphia. In 2009, he was let off from his position at the station a few days after airing an interview with Beanie Sigel, who had recently recorded a diss track about Jay-Z.

Both of these rappers had previously worked for the record label Roc-A-Fella Records. There was widespread conjecture in the media that Jay-Z was the mastermind behind the decision to fire McKelvey as a result of the interview.  Before he was offered a job with WWPR-FM to co-host The Breakfast Club, he moved back to Moncks Corner to live with his mother for approximately a year. During that time, he was in Moncks Corner.  In 2010, McKelvey joined DJ Envy and Angela Yee as co-hosts of The Breakfast Club, which was broadcast on WWPR-FM in New York City and had a nationwide television simulcast on Revolt. McKelvey also joined the show in the same year.

Power 105.1 launched the show as a response to Hot 97, which is widely regarded as one of the most successful hip-hop morning broadcasts in New York City. Because of his previous expertise in radio and his ability to “go to the edge without going over it,” he was invited to join the show as a co-host. When he was a regular cast member on the show, he jokingly referred to himself as the “Prime Minister of Pissing People Off, the Architect of Aggravation, and the Ruler of Rubbing People the Wrong Way.”
