Cher Bio, Life, and Career:

Cher, whose birth name was Cherilyn Sarkisian and who was born on May 20, 1946, is a famous American singer, actor, and television personality. She is frequently referred to as the “Goddess of Pop” by the media[1, and she has been hailed as exemplifying female liberty in a profession that is predominately dominated by men. Cher is well-known for her distinctive contralto singing voice, as well as the fact that she has worked in a wide range of entertainment-related fields during the course of her six-decade-long career, in addition to adopting a wide range of styles and appearances during that time.

The beat goes on… and on… and is as strong as it has ever been for this famous entertainer who has well past the four-decade mark while improbably converting herself from an artificial, glossy “fashion plate” vocalist into a serious, Oscar-worthy, dramatic actress… and back again! Cher managed to emerge like a phoenix from the ashes each time she was down, miraculously re-inventing herself with each decade, and finding herself on top all over again, despite having more ups and downs than the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2008. Cher’s career has had more ups and downs than the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2008.

Cher is the only performer to have received “Top 10” hit songs in four consecutive decades; as an actress, she and Barbra Streisand are the only two Best Actress Oscar winners to have a #1 hit song on the Billboard charts. As a vocalist, Cher is the only performer to have earned “top 10” hit singles in four consecutive decades. Even though she is 62 years old, Cher has not yet made the decision to entirely end her great roller coaster journey, despite the fact that she has occasionally threatened to do so.

Cher was born on May 20, 1946, in El Centro, California. Her mother, Georgia Holt, was from Arkansas and was formerly known as Jackie Jean Crouch. Her father, John Sarkisian, was a truck driver. She is related to Georganne LaPiere, who is her sister. On her father’s side, Cher has Armenian ancestry, while on her mother’s side, she has English and German ancestry, along with some Irish, Dutch, and French ancestry that is more distantly related.

Cher was still a child when her father left the family, and her mother eventually wed Gilbert LaPiere, a banker. Cher is known as Sonny. Cher’s mother, who wanted to be an actress and model herself, was the one who footed the bill for her daughter’s acting lessons. Cher suffered from severe learning difficulties due to untreated dyslexia, which led to her dropping out of Fresno High School at the age of 16 to pursue her goal of being a singer. During that time, she was romantically involved with actor Warren Beatty for a short period of time.

When Cher first met Sonny Bono in 1962, he was 11 years her senior. This encounter would forever alter the course of Cher’s life. During this time, he was employed by record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood. He was successful in his efforts to convince Spector to enlist Cher as a session vocalist, and Cher ended up providing backup vocals on some of Spector’s most iconic songs, including “You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin'” and “Be My Baby.” The connection between the two people progressed, and on October 27, 1964, they got married.

Cher rose to prominence in the music industry in 1965 as a member of the folk-rock husband-and-wife duet Sonny & Cher. The couple’s song “I Got You Babe” topped the charts in both the United States and the United Kingdom. They collectively sold 40 million records all over the world. Her solo career got off the ground around the same period, with tracks like “Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)” and “You Better Sit Down Kids” reaching the top ten. The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, which aired on CBS in the 1970s and was seen by more than 30 million people on a weekly basis over the course of its three-year run, is largely credited with launching her career as a television celebrity.

When Cher’s singles “Gypsys, Tramps & Thieves,” “Half-Breed,” and “Dark Lady” reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, she became the female recording artist with the most number-one singles in the history of the United States at the time. Cher was working at the time in the television industry. Following the conclusion of her marriage to Sonny Bono in 1975, she went on to record the disco album Take Me Home in 1979 and earn $300,000 per week performing a concert residency in Las Vegas from 1979 until 1982.

Cher made her début on Broadway in the play Come Back to the 5 & Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean in 1982, the same year that she also acted in the film adaptation of the play. After that, she became well-known for her roles in movies such as Silkwood (1983), Mask (1985), The Witches of Eastwick (1987), and Moonstruck (1987), the latter of which earned her the Oscar for Best Actress. She then revitalized her music career by releasing the rock-influenced albums Cher (1987), Heart of Stone (1989), and Love Hurts (1991).

Each of these albums produced big songs such as “If I Could Turn Back Time,” “Love and Understanding,” and “I Found Someone.” Cher made a contribution to the score of her subsequent movie, Mermaids (1990), which was responsible for producing the number-one song in the United Kingdom titled “The Shoop Shoop Song (It’s in His Kiss)”. She made her debut as a director with a part that was included in the anthology If These Walls Could Talk (1996), which dealt with the topic of abortion.
