In 1988, Ejiofor and his family returned to their nation of Nigeria to celebrate a significant family event there. Accident befell Ejiofor and his father when the automobile they were traveling in was involved in a collision with a truck. The accident left Ejiofor with life-threatening injuries; unfortunately, his father did not survive it.

Early on in his studies, Chiwetel Ejiofor received his training at a facility known as ‘Dulwich College Preparatory School.’ He was very involved in the school plays, and one of his roles was that of the “gravedigger” in William Shakespeare’s play “Hamlet.” Later, he continued his education at Dulwich College and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. Because of his enthusiasm for performing, he enrolled in the prestigious “London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art” theatre program. After Ejiofor had completed the first year of his education, Steven Spielberg cast him in the film “Amistad,” which he was directing. Ejiofor started his career as an actor with a series of theatre appearances. At the “Bloomsbury Theatre” in London in 1995, Ejiofor performed Othello, the title character in the drama “Othello.” He performed at the “Theatre Royal” in Glasgow in 1996. In the same year, 1996, he made his debut in the film industry with the television movie titled “Deadly Voyage.” Ejiofor was one of the actors that Steven Spielberg decided to use in his film “Amistad,” released in 1997. This was his debut in the world of ‘Hollywood.’ Ejiofor portrayed the role of ‘James Covey in the film. Ejiofor’s performance stood out despite his position not being very significant.

In 1999, he had a starring role in the British film ‘G: MT- Greenwich Mean Time,’ which was released in the United Kingdom. In 2000, Ejiofor appeared in “Blue/Orange,” a play written by Joe Penhall and performed in the United Kingdom. It was first performed in London’s “Royal National Theatre” for its debut. As a result of his work in the play, Ejiofor was given the “Theatre Award for Outstanding Newcomer” by the “London Evening Standard.” He was also considered for the “Laurence Olivier Award” in the “Best Supporting Actor category.” Ejiofor had a performance in the play “Romeo and Juliet” in the same year, in which he portrayed the role of Romeo.

As a result of this performance, he was presented with the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer. Chiwetel Ejiofor landed his first leading part in a film in the year 2000, and the film was titled “It Was an Accident.” Nicky Burkett, an ex-convict who made an effort to lead a regular life, was portrayed by Ejiofor in the movie. In the film adaptation of the social thriller from 2002 known as “Dirty Pretty Things,” he played the leading role. Okwe was an undocumented Nigerian national who had a job at a hotel in London and was portrayed by Ejiofor. Because of his outstanding performance in the film, Ejiofor was awarded the “British Independent Film Award” in the “Best Actor” category.

In the courtroom drama series titled “Trust,” which was shown on the “BBC” network in 2003, Ejiofor portrayed the role of a young attorney by the name of “Ashley Carter.” The show only lasted a few seasons. In the same year, he made his debut as the protagonist, Augustus, in a radio adaptation of the lyrical play titled “The Darker Face of Earth.” On August 23, it debuted on the “BBC World Service” as part of the festivities commemorating the “International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition.

In the film “Red Dust,” released in 2004, Ejiofor has the role of a fictitious politician named “Alex Mpondo.” In the science-fiction movie Serenity, released in 2005, he performed the character “The Operative.” The applause was given to him because of the superb way he portrayed the complicated nature of the adversary. Ejiofor had a role in the comedy film “Kinky Boots,” which was released in 2005.
