Chris Geere Bio, Life and Career:
English actor Chris Geere performed Jimmy Shive-Overly on the FXX comedy-drama series You’re the Worst and Roger Clifford in the urban fantasy mystery thriller Detective Pikachu. His performance as Matt Wilding on the British school drama series Waterloo Road is also one of his most enduring. He has worked extensively in the theater and entertainment industries in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
He appeared in a number of different shows, both as a guest star and in recurring capacities, including “Bombshell,” “Pete Versus Life,” “The Spa,” “Trollied,” “Modern Family,” and “This Way Up.” His filmography is brief, but includes roles in “Blood and Chocolate,” “Cleanskin,” “After Earth,” “The Last Showing,” “Urge,” “Deadtectives,” and “The Festival,” as well as “The Prince and Me 3: A Royal Honeymoon” and “The Prince and Me 4: The Elephant Adventure,” in which he played King Edvard, a.k.a. Eddie.
Chris Geere, who had been performing in plays and musicals since he was a youngster, landed his first professional job in 2004 as a spear-holder in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s production of “All’s Well That Ends Well,” starring Dame Judi Dench. Following this, he had bit parts in films like “Wondrous Oblivion” and “Blood and Chocolate,” as well as on television shows including “Band of Brothers,” “TLC,” “Casualty,” “Trust,” “Adventure Inc.,” “The Bill,” “Family Affairs,” and “Bombshell.”
But it was as Matt Wilding in the British school drama Waterloo Road, in which he starred for 60 episodes between 2007–08 and 2011–12, that he first came to widespread attention in the United Kingdom. He had recurrent roles on “The Spa” and “Trollied,” and he made guest appearances on “EastEnders,” “Hollyoaks,” “Doctors,” “Death in Paradise,” and “Outnumbered.” He also made a few appearances in movies like “Cleanskin” (starring Sean Bean) and “After Earth” (starring Will Smith).
In 2014, he starred as self-absorbed writer Jimmy Shive-Overly on the American comedy-drama series ‘You’re the Worst,’ which catapulted him into the spotlight and brought him an international fan base. After five successful seasons, the show finished in 2019, and he acted as Roger Clifford in the Detective Pikachu film starring Ryan Reynolds. Both “Modern Family” and “This Way Up” featured him in recurrent roles in recent years.
Chris Geere is noted for playing wacky and eccentric characters. One of his most well-known portrayals was the incredibly dimwitted Jimmy Shive-Overly in “You’re the Worst,” about whom he stated, “I loved him at some bits, I felt sorry for him at other bits, and I despised him much of the time.” Chris Geere, who plays Matt Wilding on the BBC series Waterloo Road, admitted in a 2007 interview that he shares many of the character’s thoughts but is more forthcoming about his own life than Wilding is.
He added that he was easily distracted in the classroom, which was noted in his school reports, which he shared with BBC. His manager gave him a citrine orb to help him meditate, and he now uses it twice a day to treat his “thinking” problem: for 10 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes before bed. Geere, who is relieved to have a role in the Pokémon film his son would enjoy, would also love to play Doctor Who or a major villain who initially seems nice but is actually “an absolute maniac.”
On March 18, 1981, Christopher William Geere was born in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England. Growing up, he moved around the UK and even spent some time in Hong Kong and Phoenix, Arizona, while his father moved around the country trying to save failing newspapers. After spending his formative years in the Winchester region of Hampshire (where his family still resides), he eventually made his way to Putney in southwest London.
He fared well in school overall but did not stand out in any particular area. His high school theater teacher, Angela Mackie, saw potential in him and pushed him to take the lead part in the school’s production of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” From that point on, he knew he wanted to pursue art, but he had no clear idea of what he wanted to do with his life. His first acting role was in a musical adaptation of the coming-of-age romantic comedy film Gregory’s Girl (1980), which he played in at the age of roughly 14.
The Guildford School of Acting ultimately accepted him into their program after he beat out over 3,000 other hopefuls. In 2017, he upped and headed for the States. In 2010, Chris Geere wed Jennifer Sawdon, a jazz singer, songwriter, and pianist. They welcomed their baby, Freddie, in 2012, who they named after a famous musician. After the birth of their baby, he and his wife got engaged with a “breastfeeding friends” program at Wythenshawe Hospital to help new mothers learn how to properly feed and care for their infants. He and his family have recently settled in Manchester.
