In an interview that took place in 2014 on the NPR interview program “Fresh Air with Terry Gross,” O’Dowd revealed to Gross that before he became an actor, he worked at a call center, and one of the jobs he had there was to make solicitation calls for a well-known wildlife charity.

O’Dowd said that he used to raise money for the organization while he was working there. He claimed that the endangered animals that he was supposed to tell potential donors about, such as New Guinean bats or newts from New Zealand, were unappealing to people, so he started making up fake endangered animals that he thought would be more appealing to them.

For example, he said that he was supposed to tell potential donors about New Guinean bats, but instead he told them about New Zealand newts. One of them was a “tiger swan,” which he defined as “basically a swan with the markings of a Bengal,” while the other was “some type of flying dolphin,” as he put it. In 2009, he and his wife Dawn first met at a gathering celebrating Dawn’s 30th birthday in Los Angeles.

In addition to Caroline Flack and Graham Linehan, Brian O’Driscoll and his wife Amy Huberman were in attendance at Chris and Dawn’s wedding in London. The IT Crowd (2006) author Graham Linehan was also in attendance.

Both of them “sort of received a mixture of thrown-out and left-of-our-own-volition,” so neither one of them finished their courses there and both of them departed because of this.

O’Dowd also worked as an impersonator of singer and Live Aid creator Bob Geldof, and also featured on a Pizza Hut advertisement. He also appeared in an advertisement for Daz washing powder, playing Sean, who after cheating on his girlfriend Lisa, gets a large plateful of spaghetti bolognese emptied down his clean white shirt and a huge bowl of trifle tipped over his head, while sat in a restaurant.
