Christopher Cantwell Bio, Life, and Career:

Christopher Charles Cantwell, who was born in the United States on November 12, 1980, is a white supremacist, neo-Nazi, antisemitic conspiracy theorist, and federal informant. He is also known by his alias, the Crying Nazi. Cantwell, a participant in the larger alt-right movement, came to the public’s attention during and immediately after his attendance at the Unite the Right demonstration that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia, in August of 2017. Cantwell was featured prominently in a Vice News Tonight documentary about the rally and its participants. In the documentary, he is shown brandishing rifles and a handgun, threatening to kill protesters, and joining other antisemitic conspiracy theorists in marching with tiki torches and chanting “Jews will not replace us!” Cantwell was also featured prominently in a Vice News Tonight documentary about the rally and its participants.

Cantwell shared the news that there was a warrant out for his arrest in a video that he uploaded not long after the demonstration. In the video, Cantwell was seen crying as he explained the situation. These threats led to the charges against Cantwell.  Cantwell has previously referred to himself as a fascist, an alt-right member, and a libertarian.  Cantwell is described as “an anti-Semitic, Alt-Right shock jock and an unapologetic fascist, who spews white nationalist propaganda with a libertarian spin” in a profile written by the Southern Poverty Law Center. According to Cantwell’s own account, he was first “radicalized” to libertarianism in 2009 after sitting through a presentation given by Michael Badnarik, a past candidate for the Libertarian presidential nomination. In 2009, he made the announcement that he would be seeking election to the United States House of Representatives in New York’s 1st District as a candidate for the Libertarian Party; however, he was unable to collect the required number of signatures to appear on the ballot. Because of the violent and racist ideas he has, he has been removed from numerous libertarian organizations on multiple occasions.

Cantwell has expressed strong anti-police sentiments in the past, even going so far as to advocate for violence against officers of the law. “It is my honest opinion that this driver would be morally justified in shooting that police officer at the moment the [police car’s] lights go on,” he wrote in a Facebook post dated June 2012 about a scenario in which police were attempting to pull over a driver. The scenario involved the police car’s lights going on.

Because of this and other statements that the group deemed to be in violation of the libertarian non-aggression principle, he was eventually kicked out of the Free State Project and prohibited from attending their gatherings. Cantwell has shared online images of himself costumed as a police officer who had been shot in the forehead for a Halloween party in 2014. Later that same year, Cantwell praised the individual who was responsible for the deaths of two police officers in New York City.

Cantwell traveled to Keene, New Hampshire with the intention of participating in the protest movement known as Free Keene, which is connected to the Free State Project. Cantwell was one of the three members of what Stephen Colbert called the “Free Keene Squad” who were featured in a satirical segment on The Colbert Report in 2014. The segment lampooned them as “brave patriots [who] are fighting back… against government overreach” by harassing “meter maids.” In 2014, Cantwell was one of the members of the “Free Keene Squad.”

Ian Freeman, the head of the group “Free Keene,” stated subsequently that Cantwell’s violent anti-police speech had expelled them from Free Keene.
