She said she would stay there until Bush met with her or returned to Washington, D.C. Veterans for Peace, Military Families Speak Out, Code Pink, and Iraq Veterans Against the War were just some of the peace organizations that joined her at the protest site, which became known as Camp Casey.

Since there was a large White House press contingent in Crawford, her vigil naturally got a lot of attention. Bush acknowledged the demonstration but declined to meet with Sheehan, claiming that they had already met in June 2004 at Fort Lewis, Washington, during a bigger event at which he addressed several mourning military families. During Bush’s whole stay in Crawford, Sheehan was there, and at the end of August, she and other Camp Casey activists took part in an antiwar bus journey from Crawford to Washington, D.C.

She challenged the longtime Democratic leader in the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, in a 2008 California election, but she lost.
