Clive Owen Bio, Life and Career:

Even though he is best recognized for his work in art house films, British actor Clive Owen is one of only a few of stars who can handle more mainstream films with the same grace and competence that he brings to his work in art house films. Owen is most often cast in roles that require him to portray people whose fundamental characteristics are a balance of physical power, intellect, conflicting soul, and forceful will.

He is best recognized by moviegoers for his roles in the films Children of Men (2006) and Closer (2004), as well as for his breakthrough performance in Croupier (1998). Owen is the fourth of five brothers and was born on October 3, 1964 in Coventry, which is located in the county of West Midlands in England. Pamela “Cotton” Owen is his mother, and Jess Owen, a country and western musician, is his father. He is their son.

Owen was only three years old when his biological father left the family, and as a result, his mother and stepfather were responsible for his upbringing from that point forward. He went to Binley Park Comprehensive School and got his start in theater at the age of 13, when he was cast as the scene-stealing Artful Dodger in a production of “Oliver!” Acting was not his initial career choice, but he ultimately decided to pursue it and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1987.

Although he had other career aspirations, he ultimately decided to pursue acting. After that, Owen became a member of the Young Vic Theatre Company, where he was able to improve his acting skills while also participating in a variety of Shakespearean performances. Clive made his debut in the film industry with the 1990 release of the British film Vroom, in which he shared the screen with David Thewlis in the role of two guys who rebuild an old American car and then hit the road.

Within the span of just two years, Clive shot to fame on television thanks to his portrayal of the scummy rogue Stephen Crane in the show Chancer (1990). However, the now-desirable Clive turned down the role that would have made him a star while the show was at the pinnacle of its popularity. He cited concerns about being typecast and unwarranted invasions of privacy as the reasons. When he moved on to his next movie, Close My Eyes (1991), he portrayed the role of a brother who gives in to his incestuous cravings for his elder sister.

This role caused more than a few people to raise their eyebrows. After the premiere of the movie, Clive’s reputation as a charming con artist was entirely destroyed, and he no longer received lucrative endorsements from commercial companies. As a consequence, there was a precipitous decline in offers during the subsequent two years.

The tenacious Clive, on the other hand, continued his work in the theater, notably playing the part of a bisexual in a production of Noel Coward’s “Design for Living.” During this time, he also made his return to television, appearing in a variety of parts across a variety of programs and mini-movies.

In 1997, Clive’s sarcastic and modern ensemble piece about relationships, “Closer,” was a great hit on the London stage. It was performed by Clive. In the film Bent (1997), he played the role of Max, a brazen and reckless homosexual lothario in decadent pre-war Germany who finds unconditional love while he is detained in a Nazi war camp. Once again, he was embroiled in controversy for his portrayal of this character.

In the film Croupier (1998) directed by Mike Hodges, he played the role of a failing writer turned casino employee who goes in over his head with a femme fatale con artist. This role gave him his biggest break in the film industry. In England, moviegoers avoided the film in droves, but in the United States, it was a hit, and Hollywood took note of Clive, who was almost unknown in countries other than England at the time.

Clive has focused primarily on film, including the offbeat British romantic comedy Greenfingers (2000), the classy and popular Robert Altman period piece Gosford Park (2001), the Matt Damon star-vehicle The Bourne Identity (2002), and the title role in King Arthur. Despite playing detective Ross Tanner in a series of successful “Second Sight” mini-movies and finding critical acclaim on stage with “The Day in the Death of Joe Egg” in 2001 (2004).

Since then, he has climbed to the very top of the Hollywood food chain, thanks in large part to the film adaptation of his critically acclaimed stage performance of Closer (2004), for which he was nominated for an Academy Award and won both the Golden Globe Award and the BAFTA Award for “Supporting Actor.” In addition, he played Sir Walter Raleigh opposite Cate Blanchett’s Elizabeth I in the film Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) and Ernest Hemingway (for which he received an Emmy nomination) in Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012), which also starred Nicole Kidman.

He is best known for his roles opposite Denzel Washington in Inside Man (2006) and Julianne Moore and Michael Caine in Children of Men (2006). The International (2009), Duplicity (2009), The Boys Are Back (2009), Trust (2010), Intruders (2011), Blood Ties (2013), Last Knights (2015), The Confirmation (2016), and Anon (2016) are some of the more recent movies in which he has starred (2018).
