Colm Meaney Bio, Life and Career:

The television shows “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” “Hell on Wheels,” and movies like “The Snapper” and “The Van” are where Irish actor Colm  Meaney is best known. From the “Abbey Theatre School of Acting,” he acquired his acting skills. He joined the Irish National Theatre and spent almost eight years travelling England with various theatre groups. He made his television debut in the late 1970s, and his recurring role as Chief Miles O’Brien in the American science fiction series “Star Trek: The Next Generation” gave him his big break. Then he departed the show to reprise the character as a prominent cast member in the parallel television series “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.” His performances in movies like “The Snapper,” “How Harry Became a Tree,” “Kings,” and “Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa” garnered him praise when he made his big-screen debut. His other famous works include the Eugene O’Neill play “A Moon for the Misbegotten,” the television series “Hell on Wheels,” and the miniseries “Random Passage.” On May 30, 1953, Colm was born in Glasnevin, Dublin, Ireland. His early years, family history, and educational background are not well known.

He made his television debut in 1978 playing the character “McGlin” in the episode “Pressure” of the British drama series “Z-Cars.” He played Daumer in the action film “Under Siege,” starring Steven Seagal, which was released on October 9, 1992, and brought in a staggering $156.6 million at the box office. In the 1993 Irish television movie “The Snapper,” he ended up with the lead part of Dessie Curley. It was the second movie in the “Barrytown Trilogy,” a trilogy based on the 1990 book “The Snapper.” He was nominated for the “Golden Globe Award for Best Actor” – “Motion Picture Musical or Comedy” for his outstanding performance in the movie.

He played Morgan the Goat in the 1995 British movie “The Englishman who Went up a Hill but Came down a Mountain.” Tara FitzGerald, Ian McNeice, and Hugh Grant were also included in the movie. The movie was accepted into the 19th Moscow International Film Festival and exhibited in the “Un Certain Regard” section of the Cannes Film Festival in 1995.


The third movie in the “Barrytown Trilogy,” which is based on the 1991 book “The Van,” featured him as Larry. This was released in 1996. He now has the distinction of appearing in every movie in the trilogy. That year, the movie was shown at the Cannes Film Festival.In July 2008, the Irish postal service “An Post” released a postage stamp that showed him as Joe Mullen from the movie “Kings.”Meaney played Kelly in the 1992 smash blockbuster epic romantic adventure drama film “Far and Away,” which starred Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman.In the 1981 television miniseries “Les roses de Dublin,” he played Michael Kavanaugh. In the movie “Nailed,” he made his acting debut as a Younger Protestant.

He then appeared in a few episodes of several other TV shows, including “Play for Tomorrow,” “Strangers,” “Moonlighting,” and “Remington Steele,” as well as TV movies like “Playboy of the Western World”  and “Kenny Rogers as The Gambler, Part III: The Legend Continues”.He appeared in two movies in 1987: “Omega Syndrome” and “The Dead.” In the first episode and series premiere of the American science fiction television series “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” created by Gene Roddenberry, he had an unidentified appearance as a helm officer in September 1987.Later, his position in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” evolved into that of Miles Edward O’Brien, the USS Enterprise-transporter D’s chief, in a recurrent capacity. He appeared in 52 episodes of the series beginning in 1987. In 1993, he departed the show to join the cast of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” an American sci-fi television series, where he later played O’Brien again.


In 173 of the 176 episodes of “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” which aired for seven seasons from January 3, 1993, to June 2, 1999, he played O’Brien. As the plot developed, his persona gained the position of Deep Space Nine’s Chief of Operations. Meaney gained a lot of fame as a result.He then appeared in a large number of additional movies and television shows.

In the first of three films adapted from Roddy Doyle’s “The Barrytown Trilogy,” based on the 1987 book “The Commitments,” he portrayed Jimmy Rabbitte, Sr., in the Irish-British-American musical comedy-drama “The Commitments.” This cult classic, which was released in August 1991 and is regarded as one of the greatest Irish movies ever, was a financial triumph and received four BAFTA Awards as well as an Oscar nomination.At the age of 14, he began taking acting classes. He joined in the “Abbey Theatre School of Acting” after finishing his secondary education to hone his acting abilities.He became a member of the “Irish National Theatre” and spent the next eight years travelling England with other theatre organisations.
