After failing out of high school, Nelson enrolled at Yakima Valley College, where he had a theatre instructor named Mr. Brady, who encouraged him to pursue a career in acting. After graduating from Yakima High School, he received a full scholarship to attend the University of Arizona and major in acting.

In 1969, Nelson made the decision to forgo his education and relocate to Hollywood in order to pursue a career in acting. After moving to California for the first time, he started working as a security guard at a soap factory until he was able to find work in the comedy writing industry. Nelson started his career in the entertainment industry as a stand-up comedian. He was an early member of The Groundlings, a comedic troupe that specializes in improv and sketch comedy.

Nelson, Barry Levinson, and Rudy De Luca created their own comic team and were regular performers at The Comic Store for a number of years and on the Tim Conway Comedy Hour (1970), which lasted only a few seasons. In 1973, Nelson quit the world of stand-up comedy, stating that “the standup comedy life was pretty unfulfilling for me.”  He then moved to Montgomery Creek, California, where there was neither power nor running water; he described his time there as “contentment, The Waltons.” During that time period, Nelson worked in Burney, California in a variety of capacities, including as a janitor, plumber, carpenter, surveyor, and high school teacher. After a hiatus of five years, he went back to acting.

In the 1979 film “…And Justice for All,” which was co-written by Levinson, he played the role of a prosecution attorney who squared off against Al Pacino. In the film Silkwood, which was released in 1983 and was directed by Mike Nichols and starred Meryl Streep, Nelson had a role. He was one of the stars of filmmaker Sam Peckinpah’s final film, The Osterman Weekend, and portrayed the role of Tom Cruise’s high school football coach in the drama All the Right Moves.

He has also made an appearance in a number of other films, the most notable of which is the Poltergeist franchise, and he has played featured roles in five different television series: Coach, Call to Glory, The District, My Name Is Earl and Parenthood. The television series Coach aired from 1989 to 1997 with Judd Nelson playing the role of collegiate football coach Hayden Fox. He provided the voice of Bob Parr, also known as Mr. Incredible, in the superhero computer-animated film The Incredibles, and he reprised his role in the film’s sequel, Incredibles 2.

Except for the video game The Incredibles: Rise of the Underminer, in which he was replaced by actor Richard McGonagle, Nelson also played the role again in the video games Kinect Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure and in the Disney Infinity video game series. The character of Gary Sinise’s Taylor had a “rival” in Nelson, who appeared as a guest on CSI: New York for three episodes.

His most recent films include The Proposal (2009), in which he played Ryan Reynolds’ skeptical father, The Company Men (2010), in which he played a greedy CEO, and Book Club (2018). He played the role of Ezekiel “Zeek” Braverman, the patriarch of the Braverman family, on the NBC television show Parenthood from 2010 until 2015. It is called Family Tree Productions, which is his producing company.
