Dallas Cowboys Biography

Despite the dissolution of the All-America Football Conference ten years earlier, the Dallas Cowboys became the first successful new franchise in the National Football League since 1960. Mr. Clint Murchison Jr. was the majority owner of the new organization however, it was in 1966 that the Cowboys began an NFL-record streak of 20 straight winning seasons, which still stands today.

This streak featured 18 years in the playoffs, 13 divisional championships, five trips to the Super Bowl, and victories in Super Bowls VI and XII, among other accomplishments. Despite winning its first two divisional championships in 1966 and 1967, Dallas was defeated by the Green Bay Packers in the NFL championship game in each of those two seasons. Following similar playoff losses in the following seasons, the 1970 season ended with a 16-13 last-second loss to Baltimore in Super Bowl V, which was broadcast nationally.

As the saying goes, “a good team that couldn’t win the big games.” That was the Cowboys’ reputation. However, they put an end to that notion the following year with a 24-3 victory over the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI. From 1975 to 1978, the Cowboys advanced to the Super Bowl on three more occasions. In Super Bowls X and XIII, they were defeated by the Pittsburgh Steelers in intensely close games, but in Super Bowl XII, they overcame the Denver Broncos 27-10.

As a team, the Cowboys were headed by future Pro Football Hall of Fame members Roger Staubach, Rayfield Wright, Bob Lilly, Randy White, Mel Renfro, and Tony Dorsett during their dynastic years in the 1970s., and his first item of business was to hire Tex Schramm to be the general manager, Tom Landry to be the head coach, and Gil Brandt to be the player personnel director.

Dallas Cowboys Career

Murchison declared in 1967 that the Dallas Cowboys will construct their own stadium in the Irving, Texas neighborhood of Irving. Texas Stadium, which seats 65,024 people, marked the beginning of a new era in Dallas pro football on October 24, 1971.

The Dallas Cowboys were known as “America’s Team” during the 1970s and early 1980s, and they were a step ahead of almost every other team when it came to image-enhancing promotions, such as the publication of The Dallas Cowboys Newsweekly, which had a circulation of 100,000, sales of Cowboys souvenirs and apparel, and the presence of the world-famous Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders.

In 1986, the Cowboys experienced their first losing season in two decades, and they went on to go 3-13 the next season. Bright, who had purchased the Cowboys from Murchison in 1984, sold the team to Jerry Jones in 1989, and the team became known as the “Bums.”

Jones appointed Jimmy Johnson, a former head coach at the University of Miami, to succeed Landry, who concluded his career with 270 victories, the third-highest total in the history of the sport. Johnson’s first squad only won once in 16 games, but a series of risky deals and astute selections in the annual NFL draught – which included Hall of Fame quarterback Troy Aikman – propelled the Cowboys back to title contention in Super Bowl XXVII, the fourth season of the Jerry Jones era.

They followed that up with a second consecutive world championship in Super Bowl XXVIII. In March 1994, Johnson was replaced as the Cowboys’ third head coach by former college coach Barry Switzer. Switzer continued the winning streak, as the “Team of the Nineties” won their third Super Bowl in four years, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-17 in Super Bowl XXX.

In 1998, Chan Gailey took over as head coach of the Cowboys, and he was succeeded two years later by Dave Campo, and then Wade Phillips, who took over in 2007. Jason Garrett was named the Cowboys’ eighth head coach in 2011, after serving as the team’s interim head coach halfway through the 2010 season. Garrett was the team’s eighth head coach in franchise history.
