Dana Stevens Bio, Life and Career:

She also appears frequently in the publication “a podcast about pop culture that is released every week. In the middle of 2003, she started working as a writer for Slate “a television and pop culture column by Surfer girl. She used the alias “Liz Penn” on her own website/blog titled the High Sign before she joined Slate.

She has been a contributor to numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post Book World, Bookforum, and The Atlantic, and a guest on both The Charlie Rose Show and The Brian Lehrer Show.

Since 2010, reviews by Stevens have carried the second-least weight on the review aggregation website Metacritic. Dana is a native of Phoenix, Arizona, and a proud UCLA alum. She tried acting in the beginning, appearing in episodes of sitcoms like “Family Ties,” but ultimately decided to pursue writing instead.

Screenplays she has worked on include the Kevin Hart vehicle “Fatherhood,” the Lasse Hallstrom-directed adaptation of a Nicholas Sparks novel titled “Safe Haven,” the Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan vehicle “City of Angels,” the Sam Raimi-directed “For Love of the Game,” the Michael Apted-directed “Blink,” and the Angelina Jolie vehicle “Life or Something Like It.” She created and served as an EP for the J.J. Abrams-produced ABC sitcom “What About Brian” for two seasons, and she did the same for the CBS drama “Reckless.”

The research for those two chapters was the most enjoyable. This consists of two chapters on cinema criticism that follow one another. One of them is about the intertwined histories of the celebrity system and cinema criticism. I don’t think many people are aware of this particular era in cinematic history, but credits weren’t used to identify actors in films until around 1910 or 1911. To the point where you couldn’t identify actors in a film. It’s possible that you’d think, “Man, I really like that blond girl from Biograph,” but you wouldn’t know it was Mary Pickford because her name wouldn’t appear onscreen. This was done on purpose so that the actors wouldn’t demand higher salaries and the medium wouldn’t become one dominated by actors.

What began to emerge, however, in the 1910s was the realization that this was not a system that could be maintained indefinitely. The public was going to learn the truth about the celebrities they worshipped. Part of the reason for this shift was the advent of film magazines, a topic I’ve written about before. Those publications sometimes had columns like “Ask the Answer Man” or “Answer Man” or something like that.  And that’s how your Mary Pickford obsession would begin.

Thus, following this phenomenon as it developed alongside Keaton’s own was a fascinating experience. We should have mentioned at the outset that he shared a birthday with cinema: 1913. His birth year of 1895, however, also happens to be the same year that the Lumiere Brothers first begin projecting moving images.

She began working for Slate in the middle of 2003, contributing to the magazine’s TV and pop-culture column, Surfer girl. She used the pen name “Liz Penn” on her own website/blog titled the High Sign before she joined Slate. She has been a contributor to numerous publications, including The New York Times, The Washington Post Book World, Bookforum, and The Atlantic, and a guest on both The Charlie Rose Show and The Brian Lehrer Show. A frequent participant in the Culture Gabfest on Slate, she is a staple of the show.
