Danushka Gunathilaka Bio, Life, and Career:

Mashtayage Danushka Gunathilaka is a professional cricketer from Sri Lanka. He plays as a top-order hitter across all formats of the game. Gunathilaka was born on March 17, 1991. In addition to that, he has rarely been used in games because of disciplinary problems. In spite of the fact that he is facing one charge of sexual intercourse without consent, he is currently free on bail in Sydney, Australia.

Gunathilaka was educated at the Mahanama College in Colombo after having been born in Panadura. Gunathilaka made his first appearance in a cricket match during the 2007–08 Inter-Provincial Twenty20 tournament for Sri Lanka Schools. He did so alongside Kusal Perera, another player from the Colts Cricket Club. In the 2009–10 season, Gunathilaka made his debut in List A for the Colombo Cricket Club against the Sinhalese Sports Club. He scored one run in the match. In addition to that, he participated in the school cricket team for Mahanama College.

In addition to that, he was a member of the Sri Lanka national under-19 cricket team that competed in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2010. In addition to that, he was a member of the Sri Lanka national under-19 cricket team that competed in the Under-19 Cricket World Cup in 2010. In March of 2018, he was selected to play for Kandy in the Super Four Provincial Tournament that was held in 2017–18.

The month after that, he was again selected for Kandy’s team to compete in the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. In August of 2018, he was selected to play for Dambulla in the 2018 Sri Lanka Cup Twenty20 League. In March of 2019, he was selected to play for Dambulla in the Super Provincial One-Day Tournament.In October 2020, he was selected by the Galle Gladiators to compete in the first season of the Lanka Premier League. This season was the first ever.

Additionally, he finished the first season of the Lanka Premier League in 2020 as the leading runscorer of the tournament with 476 runs scored across 10 matches. He single-handedly pushed the Galle Gladiators franchise all the way to the championship match of the competition. Shahid Afridi, a veteran Pakistani allrounder and the captain of the Galle Gladiators, lauded Gunathilaka’s performance in the competition and referred to him as “potentially Sri Lanka’s next Kumar Sangakkara.” Afridi named Gunathilaka “the next Kumar Sangakkara.”

His strange runout after colliding with Suranga Lakmal in the 2020 LPL final match against Jaffna Stallions garnered attention and pity on social media. The match was played against Jaffna Stallions. Due to the outstanding play, he displayed throughout the 2020 My11Circle Lanka Premier League, he was selected for the squad of the tournament for the LPL. After the players’ draft for the 2021 Lanka Premier League took place in November 2021, he was chosen to play for the Galle Gladiators. This was his first season in the LPL.

In July of 2022, the Galle Gladiators took him on as a player for the upcoming third season of the Lanka Premier League. On November 1, 2015, he competed in his first One-Day International for Sri Lanka, which was a match against the West Indies. After a streak of strong performances with the Sri Lankan A side in the tour of New Zealand in the same year hitting two fifties in four innings, he was selected for the home ODI series against West Indies in 2015. This led to his selection for the series in 2015.

Gunathilaka was given the opportunity to open the batting for one-day internationals alongside Tillakaratne Dilshan when Kusal Perera was forced to withdraw from the 2015–16 tour of New Zealand as a result of a drug scandal. His batting ability was not on display in the first two One-Day Internationals (ODIs), but in the third ODI, which was Gunathilaka’s lone fourth international encounter, he struck a lightning-quick 65 runs off just 45 balls.

The innings featured seven fours and four sixes and resulted in Australia taking control of the contest from New Zealand. Gunathilaka was named man of the match for his performance, which led to Sri Lanka’s victory in the match by a score of 8 wickets. On the same trip, on January 7, 2016, he made his first appearance for Sri Lanka in a Twenty20 International match, which was played against New Zealand.

It was not initially stated that Gunathilaka will be a part of Sri Lanka’s squad for the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy. However, he was asked to join the team to replace the injured Chamara Kapugedera. He led the team to victory over India by scoring 77 runs, which they needed. In the end, Sri Lanka chased 321 and set a new record for the highest total chased in the history of the Champions Trophy. While the team was trying to score runs, he and Kusal Mendis put together a partnership that was worth 159 runs for the second wicket.

On July 6, 2017, Gunathilaka played against Zimbabwe at MRIC Stadium and scored his first century in a one-day international competition. Together with Niroshan Dickwella, he added 229 runs to the partnership for the first wicket, which is also where Dickwella scored his first one-day international century. In order to win the match, Sri Lanka needed to chase 310 runs, which is also the first time Sri Lanka has chased more than 300 runs on their own turf. Due to his outstanding performance at the batting spot, Gunathilaka was named the match’s man of the match.

He and Niroshan Dickwella broke a milestone in the fourth One-Day International that they played against Zimbabwe by becoming the first pair of batters to score two consecutive partnerships of 200 runs or more in ODIs. He was dismissed for 87 runs, missing out on his successive century, while his adversary Dickwella got his second consecutive century.
