Dave Meltzer Bio, Life, and Career:
David Allen Meltzer is an American journalist and sports historian who reports on professional wrestling and mixed martial arts. He was born on October 24, 1959, in the United States. In addition to that, he is a frequent lecturer at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, where he covers a variety of topics pertaining to the business of mixed martial arts (MMA), professional wrestling, and boxing. Meltzer has been the publisher and editor of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter continuously since its inception in 1983. (WON).
In addition to that, he has written for publications such as the Los Angeles Times, the Oakland Tribune, Yahoo! Sports, SI.com, and The National Sports Daily. Since UFC 1 in 1993, he has provided extensive coverage of mixed martial arts, and he also provides coverage of the sport for SB Nation. Frank Deford of Sports Illustrated referred to him as “the most accomplished reporter in sports journalism” in one of his articles. Meltzer initially made his home in upstate New York but he ultimately relocated to San Jose, California, with his family.
After graduating from San Jose State University with a degree in journalism, Meltzer began his career in the media industry working as a sportswriter for the Wichita Falls Times Record News and the Turlock Journal. Early on in his life, he displayed both an interest in professional wrestling and a journalistic approach to covering the sport. Meltzer is the author of a number of wrestling-related publications that date back to 1971 and came out before WON.
The most notable of these was the California Wrestling Report, which was published around 1973 and 1974 and covered the still-active National Wrestling Alliance territories that were based out of Los Angeles and San Francisco. Meltzer began conducting an annual poll among those with whom he had corresponded regarding professional wrestling in the year 1980. This marked the beginning of what would later become known as the Wrestling Observer Newsletter. Meltzer claims that at first, he was nothing more than a simple fan.
A short while later, he began administering a tape-trading list and, in addition to sending out tape updates, would occasionally send match results and news updates as well. Meltzer stated that he wanted to keep his friends in college “in the loop” for his tape trading and the happenings in the business, as the mainstream wrestling magazines catered to a somewhat younger demographic. Meltzer stated that he wanted to keep his friends in college “in the loop” for his tape trading and the happenings in the business. Meltzer is credited with popularising the star rating system, which was developed by Jim Cornette and his childhood friend Norm M. Dooley.
The system rates match on a scale from zero to five stars (sometimes going to negative five stars in the case of very bad matches), and it is comparable to the way that many movie critics rate movies. Meltzer has awarded ratings that are higher than five stars on multiple occasions. 1981 was the year that saw the first matches rated 6.5 and 6 stars (as rated by Dooley, not Meltzer). The bout between Kazuchika Okada and Kenny Omega, which took place at Dominion 6.9 in Osaka-jo Hall in June 2018, received his highest rating of seven stars. It was his highest rating ever for a match. Wrestlers such as Bret Hart have expressed in writing how gratified they were to hear the WON praise their performances on the squared circle.
