David Kestenbaum Bio, Life, and Career:
In the year 1969, David Kestenbaum entered this world in Providence, Rhode Island. U.S.-born David Samuel Kestenbaum works as a producer for radio shows like Planet Money and This American Life. Previous to this, he worked as a correspondent for NPR. He writes primarily about economic and scientific developments. In 1996, Kestenbaum completed his doctorate in physics at Harvard University under Melissa Franklin’s supervision. His thesis was titled “Observation of Top Quark Anti-Top Quark Production Using a Soft Lepton B Tag in Proton Anti-Proton Collisions at 1.8 TeV.” Following his selection as an AAAS Mass Media Fellow in 1997, Kestenbaum went to work for a Columbus, Ohio, radio station that was an NPR member.
For NPR’s Planet Money, reporters David Kestenbaum and Jacob Goldstein are on the scene. Millions of listeners hear their stories on popular radio shows like Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and This American Life, where they humorously and insightfully explain economic concepts.
By delving deeply into the economy, the Planet Money crew gains insight, and the listener benefits by being taken along for the adventure. From a cotton farm in Mississippi to a factory in Bangladesh and back to the United States, they were there as the T-shirts were created. They met the homeowners of one of the toxic assets that nearly brought down our economy after purchasing it. Ira Glass once called the question “what is money?” the “most stoner question” ever asked on This American Life, and the listeners’ responses are just as offbeat and fascinating.
Not only has Jacob contributed to NPR, but he has also written for outlets like The New York Times Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. He’s the proud parent of two young kids, has degrees from both Columbia and Stanford, and is an accomplished guitarist and harmonicist.
David Kestenbaum has a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard and has worked as an NPR journalist for 15 years. David is a Fulbright scholar and keen rock climber, and he also happens to be a proud father of two young lads. He’s hopeless on the guitar and the harmonica.
David Kestenbaum helped establish ZX Ventures, AB InBev’s corporate venture capital and worldwide innovation arm. Recently, David served as a General Partner of ZX’s venture capital fund, where he identified and capitalized on opportunities in emerging and frontier markets where AB InBev could make a strategic investment. David’s $350 million portfolio under his stewardship had returns in the top quartile and saw capital deployment into novel concept areas including biotech and alternative protein. David has been on the boards of directors for multiple firms and is deeply concerned about the future of agriculture and food.
David has prior experience leading ZX Ventures’ innovation practice and creating the venture studio model; he was also a member of the ZX team that created an e-commerce business for AB InBev that generated over $1 billion in revenue. David has worked in the sales and marketing departments of AB InBev in both the United States and at the company’s global headquarters prior to joining ZX Ventures. David has a background in conventional finance professions, having spent years in those fields before joining AB InBev thanks to his education and experience in the business.
