Dick Vermeil Bio, Life, and Career:

Richard Albert Vermeil is a well-known retired football coach in the United States. He was a head coach in the National Football League (NFL) for a total of 15 seasons during his career. Vermeil was born on October 30, 1936. Seven of those seasons were spent with the Philadelphia Eagles, three of those seasons were spent with the St. Louis Rams, and the remaining five seasons were spent with the Kansas City Chiefs. Before entering the National Football League, he coached football at Hillsdale High School from 1960 to 1962, Napa Junior College in 1964, and UCLA from 1974 to 1975.

All three of those stops were before he entered the NFL. The 1976 Rose Bowl was won by Vermeil’s team, which was representing UCLA at the time. During Vermeil’s time in the NFL, he was able to turn around the fortunes of several clubs that had a losing record before he came. He led all of these teams to the playoffs by the end of his third season, including the Los Angeles Rams, who went on to win the Super Bowl.

When Vermeil took over as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles in 1976, he took over for a team that had not qualified for the postseason, won a playoff game, or clinched their division since the year 1960. Between the years 1978 and 1980, he put an end to each of these droughts, which paved the way for the Eagles to play in the Super Bowl for the first time in 1980. Vermeil left the National Football League following the conclusion of the 1982 campaign and did not return to the league until 1997 when he signed on with the Rams.

While he was in high school, he was the starting quarterback for the Calistoga High School football team and worked at the auto repair company that his father owned. After receiving his diploma from Calistoga High School in 1954, Vermeil attended what was then known as Napa Junior College and is now known as Napa Valley College.

After spending two years at Napa, he decided to continue his education at what is now known as San Jose State University. Vermeil took over as the starting quarterback for the San Jose State Spartans football team in 1957, one year after serving as the backup quarterback for the team in 1956. That year, the Spartans finished with a record of 3–7, and Vermeil threw for 580 yards, one touchdown, and nine interceptions.

In 1959, Vermeil began his career as a football coach by working as an assistant for the Del Mar High School football team in San Jose. After that, he served as the head coach at Hillsdale High School in San Mateo from the years 1960 through 1962. When he was ready to go to the level of junior colleges, he accepted a position as the defensive backfield coach at the College of San Mateo in 1963.

Vermeil returned to Napa Junior College in 1964 for his first head coaching post and guided the Chiefs to the best record in the history of the school with a 7–2 record under his direction. During his time at Napa Junior College, his younger brother Al was on his team. Vermeil worked as an assistant coach at Stanford under the direction of John Ralston from 1965 to 1968.

Along with Hall of Fame Coach Marv Levy, Vermeil holds the distinction of being one of the first special teams coaches employed by the National Football League (NFL). The Los Angeles Rams, coached by George Allen, hired Vermeil in 1969, the same year that Jerry Williams, who was leading the Philadelphia Eagles at the time, hired Levy as an assistant coach. He would stay with the Rams until 1974, when UCLA appointed him as the head coach of the Bruins, with the exception of the year 1970, when he worked as an assistant coach for the Bruins.

Vermeil compiled a record of 15–5–3 in two seasons (1974–75) as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins. This included a record of 9–2–1 in 1975, when he led the Bruins to their first conference championship in 10 years, as well as a victory in the Rose Bowl over an undefeated and number 1 rated Ohio State team. As a member of the Class of 2014, he was recognized by the Rose Bowl as deserving of induction into the Hall of Fame.
