Dmitri Mikhailovich Alperovitch was born in 1980 and is a think-tank founder, investor, philanthropist, podcast host, and former executive in the computer security business in the United States. He was born in the Soviet Union. In addition to being a co-founder of CrowdStrike and a former chief technology officer for the company, he is the chairman of Silverado Policy Accelerator, a geopolitics think tank located in Washington, District of Columbia. Alperovitch was born in Russia but became a naturalized citizen of the United States after moving to the United States in 1994 with his family. Alperovitch is a citizen of the United States of America despite having been born in Moscow, which was located in the Russian SFSR, a constituent country of the Soviet Union.
After his father applied for and was granted a visa to Canada in 1994, the family relocated to Chattanooga, Tennessee, the following year. Both his bachelor’s degree in computer science (2001) and master’s degree in information security (2003; both acquired at Georgia Institute of Technology) were earned by Alperovitch. This was the first-ever graduate degree offered by the school in the field of information security. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Alperovitch worked at a variety of computer security firms, notably the e-mail security startup CipherTrust, where he was one of the key inventors of the TrustedSource reputation system.
He also worked at a number of other computer security startups. After Secure Computing’s acquisition of CipherTrust in 2006 he took the helm of the company’s research team and was instrumental in establishing the Software-as-a-Service division of the firm. After the acquisition of Secure Computing by McAfee in 2008, Alperovitch was promoted to the position of vice president of threat research at the firm. In January 2010, he was in charge of leading the investigation into Operation Aurora, which was the name given to the Chinese hacking of Google and twenty other corporations.
After that, he became the leader of the investigation into the Night Dragon espionage operation of the Western multinational oil and gas companies, and he was able to trace the activities back to Song Zhiyue, a Chinese person who was living in Heze City, Shandong Province. Operation Shady RAT was a study that he issued in August 2011 on what he believed to be Chinese incursions into at least 72 different organizations. These organizations included defense contractors, firms all around the world, the United Nations, and the International Olympic Committee. Late in 2011, Dmitri Alperovitch, along with entrepreneurs George Kurtz and Gregg Marston, co-founded CrowdStrike, a security technology company that focuses on assisting businesses and governments in protecting their intellectual property and secrets from cyberespionage and cybercrime.
Dmitri Alperovitch became the chief technology officer of CrowdStrike. In 2015, CapitalG, which had previously been known as Google Capital, launched an effort to raise $100 million in funding for CrowdStrike. The company recruited senior executives from the FBI, such as Steve Chabinsky, a former deputy assistant director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, and Shawn Henry, a former executive assistant director (EAD) of the FBI’s Criminal, Cyber, Response, and Services Branch. By the time May 2017 rolled around, Warburg Pincus, Accel Partners, and Google Capital had all contributed $256 million to CrowdStrike’s investment round, and the company’s shares were valued at just under $1 billion.
The company completed its first public offering (IPO) on the NASDAQ in June 2019, at which point it was estimated that the company was worth more than $10 billion. Alperovitch resigned from his position at CrowdStrike in February 2020 in order to establish the Silverado Policy Accelerator, a non-profit organization whose mission is to address policy concerns that are associated with great power competition between the United States and its rivals. Particularly, the organization works on policy issues concerning cybersecurity, international trade and industrial security, economic and environmental security, and industrial security.
In March of 2021, Silverado Policy Accelerator was established, and Alperovitch served as the organization’s executive chairman. Alperovitch made an accurate prediction about the Russian invasion of Ukraine 2022 in December 2021, and the attack actually began in February 2022. Along with David Petraeus, James Stavridis, and Ian Bremmer, he was individually sanctioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Russia) on November 11, 2022, and prohibited from admission into Russia.
Alperovitch is one of the founding members of the Cyber Safety Review Board, which is an independent board of the United States government that was established in 2021 by the Presidential Executive Order and is responsible for conducting investigations into incidents involving cybersecurity. His appointment to the position of member of the Homeland Security Advisory Council took place in March of 2022. Additionally, Alperovitch has worked for the Department of Defense as a Special Advisor in the past.
