Dominique Wilkins Bio, Life, and Career:

Jacques Dominique Wilkins is a retired professional basketball player from the United States. He is most known for his time spent playing for the Atlanta Hawks of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Wilkins was born on January 12, 1960. Wilkins was named to the NBA All-Star Team nine times during his career, and he was selected to the All-NBA Team seven times. He is considered by many to be one of the most acrobatic slam dunkers in the history of the NBA, garnering him the nickname “the Human Highlight Film.” Because of his status as one of the most accomplished players in the history of the NBA, he was selected for inclusion on the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in October of 2021.

During the 1985–1986 NBA season, Wilkins finished as the league’s leading scorer. Wilkins was recognized as a deserving player by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and inducted that year (2006). Prior to his retirement in 1999, Wilkins played for the Los Angeles Clippers, the Boston Celtics, Panathinaikos Athens (a professional team in Greece’s top-tier level Greek Basket League, with whom he won his first titles, the FIBA European League and the Greek Cup), Fortitudo Bologna (a professional team in Italy’s top-tier level LBA), the San Antonio Spurs, and the Orlando Magic.

He spent 11 seasons with the Atlanta Hawks. Wilkins was a member of the United States men’s national team that won the FIBA World Championship in 1994 and took home the gold medal. Wilkins was born in Paris while his father was serving as an airman in the United States Air Force stationed there at the time. Gerald Wilkins, his younger brother, also competed in the National Basketball Association (NBA), primarily with the New York Knicks. Before finally settling in Washington, North Carolina, his family lived in Dallas and Baltimore. It was there that he received his secondary education at Washington High School.

He was the most valuable player for the squad when they won the Class 3-A State Championships in 1978 and 1979 in consecutive years. While Wilkins was still in high school, he was included in the “Faces in the Crowd” section of Sports Illustrated for his performance in a game against a higher classification school in which he scored 48 points, had 27 rebounds, 9 dunks, and 8 blocks. This performance earned Wilkins a spot in the section. After that, Wilkins was a standout performer in other all-star games, including the Kentucky Derby Festival Classic, the Dapper Dan Classic, the Capital Classic, and the McDonald’s All-American Game. In the game against McDonald’s, he scored 16 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. In the Capital Classic and Derby Classic, he scored 26 points and 22 points, respectively.

In the 1982 NBA draft, the Utah Jazz selected Wilkins third overall (behind James Worthy and Terry Cummings), making him their third overall pick. Wilkins, on the other hand, was not interested in playing for Utah since the team wanted him to play power forward, whereas Wilkins preferred to play small forward. At the same time, the Jazz were struggling to make ends meet due to a lack of cash flow. As a direct consequence of this, the Utah Jazz decided to make a deal with the Atlanta Hawks to acquire John Drew, Freeman Williams, and one million dollars in cash many months after the draft. As a result of the trade, the Jazz will have Drew and Williams on their roster for a total of four seasons, which places it among the most one-sided agreements in the history of the NBA.

Wilkins won the scoring title in the 1985–1986 season with an average of 30.3 points per game and had a streak of 10 consecutive seasons in which he averaged more than 25 points per game. Wilkins played a significant role in the Hawks’ rise to prominence in the 1980s, which coincided with the team’s streak of four consecutive seasons with at least 50 wins during the decade. During the 1990–1991 season, Wilkins had an average of 9.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. This was at the time that Wilkins was into his thirties, and the Hawks wanted more of an all-around impact from their star player.

Wilkins finished his career in the NBA with a point total of 26,668 and a rebound total of 7,169. He was named to the NBA All-Star team nine times and won two NBA slam dunk contests. As of the year 2021, he has the 14th spot on the scoring chart for the NBA. Because of Wilkins’s extraordinary athleticism and highlight reel dunks, he was given the nickname “The Human Highlight Film.” His signature move was a strong one- or two-handed windmill dunk, which he utilized to win the slam dunk event in 1985 and 1990.

He used this move to win both of those contests. As a basketball player, he was famous for his acrobatic scoring, for being something of a shooter at times, but also for being an amazing finisher and one of the best dunkers in the history of the NBA. On January 13, 2001, the Hawks announced that they will no longer wear his number 21 jersey. The Hawks have honored him by retiring his jersey along with those of four other former players.
