Donny Cates Bio, Life, and Career:

Donny Cates is a well-known American comic book writer, illustrator, and podcaster. He was born on September 14, 1984, and is best known for his work on comic book titles such as Venom, Thanos, Doctor Strange, Thor, and Hulk. Dallas, Texas is where Donny Cates began his life. Cates claims that his father taught him to read using comic books when he was growing up in the city of Garland in the state of Texas. Cates received his high school diploma from Garland High Schoo and went on to study at the Savannah College of Art and Design. It was at SCAD that he became acquainted with future artistic associates Tradd Moore and Geoff Shaw. Cates chose to major in sequential drawing at the university, but he dropped out after learning that he had been accepted into the Marvel internship program.

During his time as an intern, Cates was able to get away with stealing a Diamond Distributors Gem Award that had been given to Astonishing X-Men #1. Cates quit the program after one year to pursue writing his own comics, under the guidance of Marvel editor Mark Paniccia, who encouraged him to do so. Cates was presented with the opportunity to write short tales for the Dark Horse Comics firm following a chance encounter at C2E2 with a member of the company’s staff.  The first comic work ever published by Cates was a short story that appeared in Dark Horse Presents volume 2 issue 24 in August of 2013. Hunter Quaid: Armageddon Outta Here was the name given to this particular piece of writing that he and Eliot Rahal had collaborated on.

It was followed up by another article titled “Hunter Quaid: The Only Things We Have to Fear… are Nazis and Creepy Monsters,” which was published three issues later. As a result of Dark Horse being pleased with these tales, Cates was given permission to move forward with other projects such as Buzzkill, The Ghost Fleet with Daniel Warren Johnson, and The Paybacks. Cates also contributed to publications by IDW Publishing in 2016 and 2017, including one story to the anthology Star Trek: Waypoint and one story to the one-shot anthology Star Trek: Deviations. Cates eventually started working as a writer for Image Comics, which is where he published his first comic book, God Country. Because of this title, he was noticed by the editors at Marvel, who ultimately extended an offer of employment to him.

His first works for Marvel to be published over an extended period of time were runs on Doctor Strange and Thanos. Following the achievements of these series, Cates was entrusted with the writing responsibilities for Venom, where he collaborated with the artist and podcaster Ryan Stegman. As a result of this, he ended up writing many events that were company-wide, such as Absolute Carnage and King in Black. Thor’s writing duties were taken up by Cates in January 2020, while Nic Klein was promoted to the role of illustrator. Later on in that year, he would collaborate on the book Crossover with God Country musician Geoff Shaw on the project.

Thor’s writing duties were taken up by Cates in January 2020, while Nic Klein was promoted to the role of illustrator. Towards the end of the same year, they would collaborate once more on the book titled “Crossover” with the artist for God Country, Geoff Shaw. After hearing a remark from Todd McFarlane titled “Kids Love Chains,” Cates and Stegman decided to launch their own production business in June of 2021 and dubbed it KLC Press.

The duo’s book, Vanish, was going to be the first title published by the firm.  Cates took over writing duties for the Hulk comic book series in November of the same year, while Ryan Ottley was brought on as the series’ new artist.  Image Comics made the announcement that a physical publication of Vansh will be forthcoming in the month of June 2022.  Cates made his home in the city of Austin, Texas. with the comic book artist Megan Hutchison, who is now his ex-wife. The two co-hosted a podcast called The Devil’s AdvoCATES Book Club, in which they discussed comic books.

Donny Cates has collaborated with artists Dylan Burnett, Mike Deodato, and Geoff Shaw on the Cosmic Ghost Rider, Thanos, and Guardians of the Galaxy series. He has also worked on the Venom series with artists Ryan Stegman and Iban Coello. Cosmic Ghost Rider was illustrated by Dylan Burnett. Thanos was illustrated by Geoff Shaw. Together, he and illustrator Nic Klein are putting the finishing touches on the new Thor series. The King in Black incident serves as the foundation for each and every one of his Venom comics. Cates’s literary career got its start at Dark Horse Comics when he contributed a short tale to the anthology series Dark Horse Presents. Currently, he is working on a graphic novel. The first of his stories appeared in issue #24 of the magazine, which was published in August 2013 as part of the second volume of the anthology.

The narrative, which was written in collaboration with Eliot Rahal and given the title Hunter Quaid: Armageddon Outta Here, was produced. After the initial short story, another one focusing on the same character appeared three issues later. The publisher was pleased with how his writing was received and gave the go-ahead for several of his upcoming projects, including Buzzkill, The Ghost Fleet, and The Paybacks. After his stint as a writer for Dark Horse, he went on to write a Star Trek story for IDW. Later, he began writing for Image, where he was responsible for publishing God Country. The editors at Marvel Comics were initially interested in him because of the book God Country, and they subsequently contacted him with an offer.

Cates and Stegman established their own publishing house, which they called KLC Press and named after a quotation by Todd McFarlane titled “Kids Love Chains.” The duo’s book, Vanish, was intended to be the first publication under the KLC Press imprint in June 2021. Cates took over writing duties for the Hulk comic book series in November of the same year, while Ryan Ottley was brought on as the series’ new artist. Image Comics made the announcement that they would be publishing a physical copy of Vanish in June of 2022.
