Dylan Marron Bio, Life, and Career:

Dylan Marron is an American actor, writer, and activist who was born on May 31, 1988. He is best known for his voice work as Carlos in the podcast Welcome to Night Vale and for his video series Every Single Word, which is an art and data visualization project that compiles all of the words spoken by people of color in major motion pictures. Marron was born in the United States. He is currently working as a writer on Ted Lasso’s third season. Marron plays the role of Carlos, a scientist, on the show Welcome to Night Vale. Carlos becomes the main character’s boyfriend and eventually her husband. Marron first appeared on the podcast in 2013 and has continued to do so ever since.

In addition, he has participated in each and every one of the live shows. Before the casting of Marron, Carlos was originally portrayed by Jeffrey Cranor, who is also a writer for the show. Cranor, a white man who is not an actor, decided not to play the role because he did not want to be in the way of a talented Latino actor playing a major role in his show. This decision led to Cranor’s decision to step down from the role.  Marron was a fan of the show Night Vale before he was asked to play Carlos, which is how he became acquainted with the cast and crew of Night Vale through the Neo-Futurists. The decision to cast him as a member of the cast was positively received by viewers of the show.

During the performance, members of the audience were encouraged to talk to their neighbors in the audience and share a little bit about themselves. Participation was voluntary. A nomination for a Drama Desk Award in the category of Unique Theatrical Experience was submitted for The Human Symphony. Conversations with People Who Hate Me is the name of a podcast that is hosted by Marron, and in it, he speaks with individuals who have expressed animosity or hostility towards him in the form of comments on his videos or social media accounts. The podcast’s debut season consisted of a total of nine episodes, all of which were released in 2017. This podcast’s mission is to “take hateful conversations online and turn them into productive conversations offline.” The title of the podcast sums up the podcast’s overall mission.  The idea for this podcast came from an episode of This American Life in which Lindy West confronts one of her trolls.

Marron has discussed the significance of Night Vale in demonstrating that there is a large audience for media that features a diverse and non-straight cast, and he has cited the show as an example. Marron, who has curly, “gravity-defying” hair, argues that the show helps to redefine the racial politics of hair because it portrays Carlos as having “perfect hair. In Whatever, Marron played the role of Ari. This. Is. is a web series that was released in 2013 and was funded by Kickstarter. The series is about working in reality television.  Marron plays the role of a young production assistant who is stuck in a miserable job in the show.

The show takes a nuanced approach to topics that are relevant to the gay community, including the issue of racism within that community.  Marron was able to bring to the role his experience working in the field of neo-futurism. Performers take the stage in their natural state within the Neo-Futurist movement. When asked about the authenticity of his portrayal of Ari, Marron responded as follows: “When you’re playing a character like that you just have to access what is true for them. And if you want to apply that in the Neo-Futuristic way that I have begun to think about character, is that you can’t help but bring yourself into every role that you have.” Marron co-wrote, performed in, and directed the two-person show Ridgefield Middle School Talent Nite with Jo Firestone.

The show was about a middle school talent show, and each performer took on several different roles throughout the performance. In 2010, the performance was honored with a Director’s Award from the Capital Fringe Festival.  The New York Neo-Futurists were an experimental theatre company, and Marron was a member of the company in the past. Marron developed a play for their long-running show, “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind: 30 Plays in 60 Minutes,” in which the performers took on the roles of audience members.

After completing this work, he went on to develop it further into a longer, more self-contained show called The Human Symphony, which ran from January 22 to February 14, 2015. This show tells stories about people who met through online dating. Marron invited six members of the audience to join her onstage to tell stories while she played pre-recorded interviews with other audience members about their dating experiences over the sound system.

Marron wanted to have fruitful and nuanced conversations with the people he interviewed for the podcast. The purpose of Marron’s show is not to argue with his guests or to find areas of agreement with them; rather, he wants to listen to people and have them listen to him in return.  In order to make it easier for guests on the podcast to take part in the discussion, we provide them with the option of maintaining whatever level of anonymity they prefer.  USA Today highlighted the podcast as a “Podcast Pick” in their publication.  During the 2018 Webby Awards, the podcast was also recognized as having the Webby Award for the best individual episode. In 2018, with the beginning of the podcast’s second season, the format was altered.
