Eddie Bravo Bio, Life, and Career:
Edgar A. Bravo, whose given name is Cano and who was born on May 15, 1970, is a musician, stand-up comedian, podcaster, and instructor of martial arts in the United States. After attaining a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu in 2003, Bravo started teaching a form of jiu-jitsu that he had invented on his own and eventually established 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu. Additionally, he is the brains behind the Eddie Bravo Invitational (EBI) grappling competition as well as the ruleset for the Eddie Bravo Invitational. Both “The Joe Rogan Experience” and “The Tin Foil Hat Podcast” have included him as a recurrent guest. On May 15th, 1970, Bravo was brought into the world. Edgar A. Cano was his birth name, but he later legally changed his surname to Bravo, which was his stepfather’s last name. Cano was his middle name.
His biological mother and father are both of Mexican ancestry. As he got older, Bravo became interested in music and taught himself how to play the guitar and drums. He started a few different bands with the intention of making it big in the music industry one day. Additionally, Bravo developed an interest in athletics through his participation in American football and on the wrestling team at his high school. In 1991, Bravo relocated to Hollywood, California in order to pursue a career in the music industry. It was during this time that he formed the band Blackened Kill Symphony. He went to the gym a total of two times despite having a membership at the gym because he wanted to avoid “looking like a slob” while performing.
Shortly after that, Bravo signed up for karate classes. In 1994, Bravo made the decision to train in Brazilian jiu-jitsu after watching Royce Gracie win an Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) bout. He began his training under the instruction of Jean Jacques Machado. In addition, from 1996 until 1998, Bravo was a student at a Jeet Kune Do dojo. In the year 1998, Bravo made the decision to concentrate entirely on Brazilian jiu-jitsu and quit training in any other forms of martial arts. Around this time, he was awarded a blue belt and began experimenting with different ways to finish opponents using a “Twister,” which is a particular spinal lock submission hold. In 1999, Bravo attained the rank of purple belt and started working on the guard that would become his hallmark move: the rubber guard.
After taking first place in the North American trials, Bravo competed in the 2003 Abu-Dhabi Combat Club (ADCC) Submission Wrestling World Championship as a brown belt competitor in the 145-pound/66-kilogram division. In what was believed to be a shock, Bravo defeated Gustavo Dantas in the elimination round after submitting him with a rear naked choke. After that, Bravo competed against Royler Gracie, who is a three-time ADCC champion and a four-time world champion, in the quarterfinals. Throughout the entirety of the bout, Bravo and Gracie traded comfortable top positions with one another.
Eventually, Bravo won the match by employing his game of rubber guard and finishing Gracie with a triangle choke. After that, Bravo would up losing in the semifinals to Léo Vieira, who would go on to win the tournament. Upon his return to the United States after the competition, he was presented with a black belt by Jean Jacques Machado. Subsequently, he opened his first 10th Planet Jiu-Jitsu school in Los Angeles, California, which is a no-gi jiu-jitsu system. This school is named after the 10th planet in the solar system.
Bravo Gracie and Royler Gracie decided to compete in another grappling match in 2014, despite the fact that they had both been out of active competition for several years. At Metamoris III, there was a match that lasted twenty minutes and was decided entirely by submissions. The competition began with Bravo drawing quarter guard and defending Royler’s top assaults. Around the eight-minute mark, Bravo flipped to an offensive attack after deciding to defend Royler’s top attacks. After a few successful reversals by both competitors, Bravo was able to execute a series of moves from half guard, culminating in an “electric chair” move on Gracie. Bravo had Gracie in a calf slicer in the waning minutes of the match, but Gracie did not tap out before the clock ran out, and as a result, the bout has deemed a draw.
