Eddie Hearn Bio, Life, and Career:
Edward John Eddie Hearn is prominent in English sports promotion. He now serves as the chairman of Matchroom Sport. Canelo Alvarez, Katie Taylor, Anthony Joshua, and Alycia Baumgardner are just a few of the boxers that Eddie has successfully promoted on their way to becoming undisputed or unified world champions. The rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves, which took place in 2014, and the fight between Anthony Joshua and Wladimir Klitschko, which took place in 2017, both took place at Wembley Stadium with 80,000 and 90,000 fans, respectively, in attendance. He has also promoted some of the most significant events in the modern era of boxing, including the rematch between Carl Froch and George Groves.
In addition, he is the founder of Matchroom Sport’s father, Barry Hearn OBE’s son. Eddie started working for a sports management organization that represented golfers. He then moved on to promote online poker with Matchroom, and its tournaments were shown on Channel 4, Channel 5, and Sky Sports in the United Kingdom. Hearn decided to assist British boxer Audley Harrison in rehabilitating his career after meeting him at a poker game. As a result, Hearn successfully gained Harrison a bout against heavyweight champion David Haye for the WBA championship. Harrison won the match.
In 2015, Hearn acquired an exclusive contract with Sky Sports, a broadcasting company in the UK, to broadcast up to 20 boxing programs per year. This agreement was in force for six years and continued until 2021. Hearn announced the first-ever $1 billion boxing contract in May of 2018 when Matchroom and the streaming service DAZN struck an agreement to broadcast programs throughout the United States. The 750 million-pound deal was in British pounds.
As part of the core of the agreement, Hearn and Matchroom Boxing will produce 16 events in the United States. These events will be streamed exclusively on DAZN in the United States, while DAZN will also broadcast 16 of Hearn’s events in the United Kingdom. In 2019, Hearn agreed to arrange a professional boxing event between YouTube celebrities KSI and Logan Paul. The fight was scheduled to take place in Los Angeles. Boxing purists voiced significant disapproval of the fight, which took place on November 9, 2019, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and was highly condemned.
About their first bout as amateurs, which Hearn had previously turned down the opportunity to promote, he said it was “a very excellent fight” and told himself, “I’m doing the rematch.” In the same year, Hearn was subjected to further criticism for organizing the rematch between Andy Ruiz Jr. and Anthony Joshua in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. This criticism was based on the fact that Saudi Arabia has a dismal reputation regarding human rights. He justified the decision by noting that Saudi Arabia wanted to enhance its image and that his duty was to “give the finest opportunity for [his] warriors.” He also said that the decision was made in the best interest of Saudi Arabia.
In April of 2021, Hearn’s father decided to stand down from the post of chairman and assume the role of president of the business in an advisory capacity. This paved the way for Hearn to succeed his father as Chairman of the Matchroom Sports Group of Companies. Canelo Alvarez and Billy Joe Saunders fought on May 8, 2021, in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, in front of 73,126 people, a record-breaking number of spectators for an indoor boxing event in the United States. Hearn promoted the event.
Later on, in the same month, Hearn became embroiled in a verbal spat with rival boxing promoters Bob Arum of Top Rank and Frank Warren of Queensberry Promotions after the collapse of negotiations for a prospective megafight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. On June 3, 2021, Eddie Hearn announced that he had signed a 5-year deal with streaming service DAZN, meaning he would be taking his entire stable of Matchroom boxers to DAZN. This marked the end of Matchroom’s long-standing partnership with UK broadcaster Sky Sports and their long-running series, Sky Sports World Championship Boxing. Matchroom’s boxers would no longer be featured on Sky Sports’ long-running series.
By the terms of the agreement, DAZN Boxing would be the only broadcaster of all Matchroom events; in addition, beginning in July 2021, at least 16 Matchroom UK fight cards per year would be made accessible exclusively to DAZN subscribers in the United Kingdom, and Ireland. Following the Conor Benn drug scandal in October 2022, which revealed that Benn, one of Hearn’s most promising prospects, had twice tested positive for a prohibited substance before his fight with rival Chris Eubank Jr., Hearn was subjected to the most criticism he had ever received in his career up to that point.
It was only after the news of one of the positive tests was leaked to the British media during the fight week promotion that the bout and the entirety of the undercard were ultimately called off. This was months after the failed test was first made known to the promotional parties and the British governing body. In addition, the bout was ultimately called off before it even took place. Simon Jordan, who co-presents talks boxing, eventually became Hearn’s most vocal and vehement opponent on the subject.
Hearn and Jordan engaged in verbal sparring within the internet boxing community, with Hearn going so far as to propose to fight Jordan within the context of the boxing ring, an offer that the talkSPORT radio presenter promptly rejected. Eddie is a non-fiction author who has written books that have been quite successful, in addition to his work with promotional companies. At the 2021 Sports Book Awards, his first book, “Relentless: 12 Rounds to Success,” was named the “Health and Fitness Book of the Year.”
