Elliott Kalan Bio, Life, and Career:

Elliott Charles Kalan is a comedian who was born in the United States on December 3, 1981. He was the head writer for the Netflix era of the cult series Mystery Science Theater 3000, and he was also a former head writer for The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In addition, he has written comic books and is a co-host of the podcast The Flop House. Kalan spent his childhood in Millburn, New Jersey, and attended Millburn High School, where he earned his diploma with the class of 1999. He received his education from the Rita & Burton Goldberg Department of Dramatic Writing while enrolled at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.

There, he focused his studies on screenwriting. In 2003, Elliott Kalan started his career at The Daily Show as a production assistant. Since then, he has worked his way up through the ranks, becoming a producer, a staff writer, and ultimately the head writer. Alongside fellow television writer Brock Mahan, Kalan was instrumental in the formation of the comedy group The Hypocrites. In addition to that, he was the host of the live talk and variety stage show known as The Primetime Kalan (originally The Midnight Kalan and later The New Kalan Show).

The show was conceived of by Kalan, its producer Erik Marcisak, and its director Joe Guercio. Kalan, Marcisak, and Dan McCoy were also responsible for the show’s writing and performances. Stephen Colbert, Samantha Bee, and Rob Corddry were among the many co-workers of Kalan’s at The Daily Show who made appearances on the show. Kalan has provided voice-over narration for various comic book segments featured in “The Decider,” and he has also made cameo appearances on The Daily Show on occasion. When Jon Stewart was hosting the 78th Academy Awards, he included a montage called “gay cowboy,” which was a comedic series of clips from classic westerns. The purpose of the montage was to show that the gay content in Brokeback Mountain is not something new.

The incident has been the subject of numerous blog posts, many of which imply that Metro’s decision to fire Kalan violates fundamental journalistic principles as well as freedom of expression. It’s possible that he was later rehired as a result of the publicity that this incident received. In 2009, he announced his resignation from the Metro, citing personal reasons “Why should you go now? My creative life has reached a point where I believe it is time for me to advance. Or I’m going undercover to deliver Osama bin Laden to justice. Choose the justification that appeals to you the most.”Kalan is also a stand-up comedian, and in 2013, he shared the stage with John Oliver, Rory Albanese, and Adam Lowitt while performing at a number of USO shows in Afghanistan.

He was instrumental in putting together this montage. Between the years 2006 and 2009, Kalan penned a weekly column for the Metro, a free morning newspaper. In a column that he penned for the issue of the Metro that was published on August 3, 2007, Kalan wrote a joke that was self-deprecating and made fun of the increasingly antiquated nature of the newspaper business. As a result, Kalan was fired. After this, on August 20, 2007, a brief article was published in New York Magazine about the incident which was heavily publicized on internet blogs such as Media Bistro, Huffington Post, and Gawker.

Kalan made the announcement that he was resigning from his position as head writer for The Daily Show in August 2015. In May 2016, it was revealed that he would be taking on the role of head writer for the writing staff of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival. Alongside the show’s creator, Joel Hodgson, Kalan made an appearance on episode 1103 of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 series that is produced by Netflix on April 14, 2017. The two portrayed different characters in a “host segment” of the movie The Time Travelers, which served as the basis for that episode.

On the episode of Jeopardy! that aired on January 25, 2021, Kalan competed against other contestants. It was the second-place finish for him. Kalan is one of the hosts of the podcast The Flop House, which he co-hosts with fellow comedians Dan McCoy and Stuart Wellington. On the podcast, the hosts discuss and make fun of major movies that were considered “flops” commercially or critically, such as Gamer and All About Steve. After being published on Gawker, a supplementary episode of the Flop House in which Kalan improvised a rapid-fire pitch for a film based on the comic Ziggy became a minor success on the Internet and went viral.

In addition, both Dan McCoy and Kalan have had work published in the comedy magazine Whim Quarterly as well as the film zine I Love Bad Movies. In addition to that, Kalan is one of the hosts of the podcast Presidents Are People Too! on the Audible platform, along with the American historian Alexis Coe. The lives and times of the Presidents of the United States of America are dissected in this podcast. The Kalan family makes their home in Los Angeles, California, alongside Danielle, Kalan’s wife, and their two sons. He is the twin of his sister.
