Embeth Davidtz Bio, Life, and Career:

Embeth Jean Davidtz is a dual citizen of the United States of America and South Africa. She was born on August 11, 1965. Films including Army of Darkness, Schindler’s List, Matilda, Mansfield Park, Bicentennial Man, Fallen, Junebug, and Fracture include her as an actress, and she has also appeared in the television programs Mad Men, Californication, In Treatment, and Ray Donovan. Davidtz was born to South African parents John and Jean in Lafayette, Indiana, in the United States, while her father was attending Purdue University to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

After thereafter, the family relocated to Trenton, New Jersey, and then again, when Davidtz was nine years old, they went to South Africa. Davidtz’s genealogy can be traced back to the Dutch, the English, and the French. Prior to beginning her studies in South Africa, she was required to become fluent in Afrikaans because her father had accepted a teaching position at Potchefstroom University. Davidtz received his high school diploma from The Glen, located in Pretoria, in 1983. He then attended Rhodes University, which is located in Grahamstown.

At the age of 21, Davidtz made her stage acting debut as Juliet in a stage performance of Romeo and Juliet at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre in Cape Town. The play was produced by CAPAB (Cape Performing Arts Board), which is now known as Artscape. Performing in both English and Afrikaans, she has starred in other local plays, such as Stille Nag (Silent Night) and A Chain of Voices, all of which earned her nominations for the South African Tony Award, which is the award that is roughly equal to the Tony Award in the United States.

In 1988, she made her debut in the film industry with a bit part in the American horror movie Mutator, which was shot in South Africa. Not long after that, she was cast as the daughter of a mixed-race couple in the South African short telemovie A Private Life. The role was a more significant one for her. For her performance in the drama Houd-den-bek in 1990, Davidtz was recognized with the DALRO Award for Best Supporting Actress.

She was considered for the Esther Roos Award in the category of Best Actress in a Supporting Role in an Afrikaans Film in 1991 for her performance in the same play. Her performance in the South African film Nag van die Negentiende in 1992 caught the attention of director Steven Spielberg, who later gave her the part of Helen Hirsch in the film Schindler’s List. Sheila was portrayed by Davidtz in the 1991 film “Army of Darkness” directed by Sam Raimi, which also starred Bruce Campbell in the role of Ash Williams. It is now considered a cult classic and is the third installment in the Evil Dead film franchise.

In 1993, Davidtz portrayed the character of Helen Hirsch in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List. In the year 1995, Davidtz was cast in pivotal roles in the movies Murder in the First and Feast of July, both of which were produced by Merchant Ivory Productions. She was cast in the part of Miss Honey, Matilda’s first-grade teacher, in the 1996 film adaptation of the book of the same name.

In the mystery drama Fallen, which was released in 1998, Davidtz played a theologian who assisted Denzel Washington in solving a supernatural wave of killings. The same year, she also appeared as a femme fatale related to Kenneth Branagh in Robert Altman’s film The Gingerbread Man. The year after that, Davidtz portrayed a woman of the world in the 19th century in Patricia Rozema’s remake of the Jane Austen comedy Mansfield Park, and she also had a dual role opposite Robin Williams in the futuristic fable Bicentennial Man. Both of these roles were in the same year.

In the film Bridget Jones’ Diary, which was released in 2001, Davidtz played the part of Natasha, a coworker who was also one of the love interests of Mark Darcy, who was played by Colin Firth. In the same year, she made her debut on the CBS drama Citizen Baines, in which she played the daughter of an unsuccessful candidate for the United States Senate (played by James Cromwell), who herself is considering a job in politics. Other roles include playing opposite Tony Shalhoub in the horror movie Thirteen Ghosts, which was released in 2001. She had a role in the drama directed by Michael Hoffman in the year 2002 titled The Emperor’s Club.

Her role in the 2005 film Junebug was that of an unconventional art dealer from Chicago who traveled to North Carolina to finally meet her husband’s relatives for the first time. As Dr. Derek Shepherd’s sister Nancy in the third season episode of Grey’s Anatomy titled “Let the Angels Commit,” Davidtz has also appeared as a guest star on the ABC drama series Grey’s Anatomy. In 2008, she appeared on the HBO series In Treatment as a recurring character named Amy. Alongside Josh Charles’ character, Jake, she was a member of a troubled relationship.

In the drama 2007, “Fracture,” she played the role of the unfaithful and tragic wife of the character played by Anthony Hopkins. She played the role of Rebecca Pryce, Lane Pryce’s wife, on the television show Mad Men, which aired on AMC from 2009 to 2012. On the Showtime series Californication, she also portrayed the role of Felicia Koons, the mother of Becca’s best friend Chelsea as well as the wife of the school’s dean. In the English language adaptation of “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” released in 2011, Davidtz portrayed the role of Annika Blomkvist. She also made a cameo appearance in the Spider-Man reboot The Amazing Spider-Man, released in 2012, playing the role of Mary Parker, Peter Parker’s absent mother.
